Pipe break in an Financial District, MA building

Common Causes of Sewage Issues

Sewage issues in commercial buildings can be caused by a number of different factors. If left unaddressed, these underlying complications can continue to cause damage to your property in Financial District, MA, and lead to devastating water damage costs. Whether the problem is a blocked sewer or broken pipe, taking prompt action is crucial in order to protect your commercial property. The following causes of sewage issues are very common in commercial buildings and must be addressed immediately.

1. Foundation Damage

If you come across cracks or other forms of damage to your building’s foundation, it may be indicative of serious sewage problems. Some common issues that can lead to foundation damage may include:

  • Improper drainage
  • Sewer line failure
  • Leaking sewer vents
  • Damage to plumbing systems

The best way to avoid these issues is to quickly repair a damaged foundation before the deterioration leads to a blocked sewer or pipe burst and becomes more costly.

2. Water Pipe Issues

Various forms of damage to your water pipes can harm other areas of your commercial property. If you experience any pipe breaks or leaks, they may cause water stains or swollen ceiling tiles and walls. These signs of water damage can even cause mold to crop up if they are not taken care of appropriately. Be sure to contact water restoration services in order to prevent any further water damage that results from broken pipes.

3. Damage to Cast-Iron Sewer Lines

There are numerous plumbing problems you might come across that may signal cast-iron sewer line damage. If you notice unpleasant sewer gas odors, a blocked sewer may be the culprit and you should contact a professional to address this. However, damaged sewer lines may also cause clogged drains and lead to a toilet overflow. Don’t delay having a sewer problem fixed, because the damage can build up and lead to excessive costs and stress.
Any problem that concerns your commercial sewage system should be taken care of as quickly as possible. Protecting your property from water damage caused by pipe breaks or other failures can benefit both you and your business.

How To Handle an Overflowing Toilet

6/10/2019 (Permalink)

A clogged toilet needs to be dealt with correctly to prevent sewer damage

While toilets may get clogged or not function as they should from time to time, an overflowing toilet can pose a large issue, especially if dealing with a sewage backup. If sewage water enters your home in Seaport, MA, it is labeled Category 3 water and needs to be considered an emergency since the bacteria, viruses, and microbes in the contaminated water can cause serious illness and harm to anyone it comes into contact with. This situation warrants the help of a professional sewage cleanup and restoration company. Here is some useful information for dealing with a toilet overflow and sewer damage.

Possible Causes of a Sewage Backup

While you should contact a sewage company whenever a backup occurs, there are several reasons sewage might make its way into your home:

  • Clogged or flooded toilet
  • Tree roots affecting sewer line
  • Damaged, worn, or clogged sewer line
  • Municipal sewer backup

How To Deal With a Clogged Toilet

While a clogged toilet is not an emergency in itself, it needs to be dealt with correctly to prevent sewer damage from occurring. Often, a small clog can be handled using a toilet plunger. You should prevent overflowing ahead of time by taking the lid off the tank and pushing the flapper down, which prevents water from entering the bowl. Then turn off the toilet’s main water supply. If a plunger doesn’t fix the clog, you can try using a toilet auger or snake to break up a clog in the drainage pipe. Sometimes, a plunger or auger won’t be enough to fix the issue and will need to be fixed by a professional plumber.

Since sewage backup is grossly contaminated and causes severe harm to any who consumes or comes into contact with it, you should always call a professional sewer damage cleanup company rather than try to clean up the mess yourself. Prevent a toilet overflow from occurring by knowing how to effectively handle clogs.

Take smoking outside

Steps You Need to Take When Smoking at Home

While you might not always realize it, every time you smoke a cigarette you are at risk of starting fire. If you’re not careful, the embers of your cigarette can easily come into contact with something flammable and ignite into a much larger problem. It is especially important to be aware of surroundings when at home in Back Bay, MA, since there are many flammable objects that can catch fire. In fact, cigarette fire is the number one cause of civilian home fire deaths in the United States. Here are a few important steps you need to take when smoking at home to protect yourself and your family.

1. Take Smoking Outside

With so many flammable objects inside your home, the most important safety precaution you can take when smoking is to take it outside. It especially important you never smoke in your bedroom or while lying in bed. Bedding materials can catch fire easily, and you might fall asleep while smoking.

2. Use Ashtrays

3. Completely Put Out Butts

Make sure to completely put out cigarette butts and ashes before throwing them into the trash to prevent an ashtray fire. It is a good idea to soak the ashes and butts in water before tossing them.

4. Never Smoke Near Oxygen

Stay away from oxygen tanks or other places oxygen is used to prevent an explosive fire. Even if the oxygen source is turned off, stay far away to be safe.

What Distinguishes Mitigation From Restoration?

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

Clean water and contaminated water can both lead to mold growth

Disaster Response Services Offered by a Flood Cleanup Company

Building owners and property managers are likely to hear about mitigation when arranging for damage restoration. Mitigation should precede restoration, and storm or water damage may become more difficult and costly to restore without timely mitigation. Find out more about the disaster response services offered by a flood cleanup company in Boston, MA.

Limiting Damage

The goal of mitigation is to limit the severity of damage to a structure. In the event of storm damage, this phase may involve the following measures:

  • Boarding up broken windows
  • Tarping over roof damage
  • Extracting standing water

The first two methods can prevent more contaminated water from leaking into a structure and keep out debris. Standing water from a flood or sewer backup is contaminated and will continue to degrade until it is pumped out of a structure.

Preventing Secondary Damage

A flood cleanup company can eliminate the types of primary damage that are prone to cause secondary damage. Clean water and contaminated water can both lead to the following forms of damage:

  • Corrosion
  • Mold growth
  • Rot
  • Ruined building materials or contents

Rely on the expertise of trained professionals to determine whether porous contents or materials such as drywall or insulation should be torn out and replaced. A mitigation and restoration company can provide a variety of cleaning methods and rebuild a damaged structure.

Restoring Damage

Restoration can commence as soon as the area affected by storm or water damage is completely dry. This phase of the process involves rebuilding, returning cleaned contents or replacement items and taking other measures to restore a structure to pre-damage condition.

Some companies specialize in either mitigation or restoration. An all-in-one company provides both services. It is easier to guarantee a seamless transition from mitigation to restoration and a more accurate estimate when the process is started and finished by a certified flood cleanup company in Boston, MA.

Understanding Schedules for Sprinkler System Maintenance

Fire sprinkler system for a commercial building in Chinatown, MA

Different Elements of Your Sprinklers Should be Checked Throughout the Year

The fire sprinklers in commercial properties are vital to the safety and continued operations of businesses. However, while many property owners install these systems and forget about them, sprinkler maintenance is pivotal to the continued protection and viability of these systems. Different elements of your sprinklers should be checked at various intervals throughout the year.

1. Every Week

At least once a week you should check the control valves and the gauges. However, this varies based on sprinkler style. Control valves should be tested on any system, ensuring they are properly sealed, free of blockages and in the open position. Gauges on a deluge, pre-action or dry system should be inspected weekly for normal pressure readings.

2. Every Month

General sprinkler maintenance requires that gauges in a wet pipe or water-based system are inspected at least once per month. Also, alarm valves should be checked externally. Primarily, you are looking for any signs of damage and checking that appropriate pressure is sustained.

3. Change of Seasons

Either four times a year or at the change of every season, you should check the alarm devices and the hydraulic nameplate. The devices should be inspected for any physical defects, and the hydraulic nameplate should remain secured to the riser. Also, make sure that the nameplate is legible.

4. Once Per Year

A plumbing specialist in the Chinatown, MA, area should be called out once per year to inspect the entire system. While you may be performing all the required visual inspections, a specialist will ensure that the mechanics of the system are operating as they should be.

Sprinkler maintenance is essential to the proper functioning of your fire suppressant system. Without adequate inspections, it is possible that your sprinklers will be clogged and fail during a time of crisis. Therefore, perform the visual checks as described, and once per year hire a professional.

3 Cleaning Tips for Preventing Mold Growth

4/10/2019 (Permalink)

To improve air quality specialists recommend vacuums with HEPA filters

Three Tips for Upgrading Your Cleaning Practices for Fungus Control

Finding a mold problem in your commercial building in South End, MA, can be frustrating. It may seem that there is nothing you can do to foresee and prevent such issues, but that's not usually the case. Keeping your building dry and clean with regular tasks such as air duct and carpet cleaning can help you stop mold in its tracks. Here are three tips for upgrading your cleaning practices for fungus control.

1. Remove Dust From Air Ducts

Mold spores love to latch onto dust, so it logically follows that the less dust you have in your building, the less likely you are to have places where mold will want to settle and grow. Your HVAC system is full of hard-to-reach places for dust to gather. It's a good idea to have it cleaned professionally once a quarter to prevent a buildup of dust for fungus to feed on.

2. Protect Your Floors

Spores travel inside on clothing, bags and shoes, and they often settle on your floor. If your carpet is wet in any area, it is highly susceptible to mold

development. Regular carpet cleaning as well as the placement of industrial mats at every door to catch some of the spores as people enter can prevent this problem.

3. Improve Air Quality

Your janitorial staff probably vacuums your building daily. To further improve air quality and thus lower the number of particulates in the air, mold remediation specialists recommend vacuums with HEPA filters. These filters clean the air by trapping fungus spores and other particles. The fewer spores you have in the air, the less likely they are to settle and create mold problems.

You don't have to resign yourself to the assumption that a mold problem is something you will inevitably have to deal with. With thorough carpet cleaning, vacuum upgrades and professional duct cleaning, you can reasonably expect to prevent a mold growth in your building.

Pretesting: 3 Ways the Process May Reduce Insurance Claim Expense

3/19/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Boston Downtown can perform pretest in your home or business.

As a Seaport, MA, business owner, you may be concerned about what kind of damage natural disasters can cause and how they might impact your insurance premiums should you need to file a claim. However, there are ways to lower the risk of an incident, and one of the most effective can be pretesting. This process can help you find vulnerable areas around your commercial property that may be more at risk to disaster than others so you can make repairs or upgrades and lower the risk of needing to file a claim in the future.

1. Problem Areas Can Be Pinpointed

If you suspect one area of your building may be prone to problems during a flood or high winds or that a problem already exists, pretesting can confirm your suspicions. For example, if one side of your property experiences poor drainage, this type of testing can help assess risk and the grade of the problem. If it is a high-risk issue, then you may need to call your insurance agent with this information and ask about making a claim.

2. You Can Discover Your Options

After testing, your emergency disaster response team will likely go over the results with you and then offer a variety of options for repairs and upgrades. Some may include the tearing out and replacing of certain building materials or making improvements to a fire alarm system to promote early detection. This can be beneficial, as an array of options may help you be more flexible with your finances.

3. Tests Are Performed By Professionals

A professional disaster mitigation and restoration service is usually capable of performing these tests, and its experienced technicians can help you feel confident about they results they report. They may also be able to advise you about making an insurance claim based on the testing’s findings.

Pretesting may lower the financial risk associated with making an insurance claim on your Seaport, MA, business. From fires to floods, knowing where problems may lie can reduce the chance of serious damage to your building if these events occur.

How To Replace a Toilet

3/18/2019 (Permalink)

A leaking toilet can cause damage in your South Boston, MA home

Over time, a leaking toilet can cause problems and require help from a water damage specialist. Sometimes you can remedy the situation by replacing a faulty component. However, if your toilet repair is unsuccessful, replacing the entire unit may be your only option. Although the task may seem intimidating, the process is typically straightforward. Following a few essential guidelines can help you successfully accomplish this home improvement project.

Measure Before You Begin

Before installing a different commode, you should verify that the new device can fit into the allocated space. To accomplish this, complete a few important measurements:

  • Distance from the back wall to the floor bolts
  • Space between the current bowl and side walls
  • Distance from the tank to water supply lines

Remove Existing Toilet

Disconnecting a leaking toilet can be messy. To minimize water seepage, you should complete the following steps:

  • Turn off the water supply
  • Flush commode to remove fluid
  • Absorb remaining liquid with a sponge
  • Place a bucket under tank before removing supply line

To disassemble your old toilet, unscrew the tank from the bowl. Then, loosen and remove the nuts holding the unit to the floor and place the detached commode on a garbage bag. You should also remove the old wax ring and any excess wax remaining along the top of the drain.

Set up New Toilet

Before connecting your new unit, you should install new floor bolts and place a new wax ring on the base of the toilet outlet. Then, lower the bowl over the new bolts, pushing it straight down to prevent ring damage. Once the base is firmly in place, secure the nuts. To prevent cracks, avoid overtightening.

After installing the base, carefully attach the tank. You should ensure the unit is level, and then reconnect the water supply. Before finalizing the project, verify the absence of leaks and adjust components as necessary.
A Simple Project

Replacing an old, leaking toilet with a new model doesn’t have to be a hassle. Measuring before commencing the project and taking steps to minimize water seepage can help every homeowner in South Boston, MA, efficiently accomplish the task.

Mold Cleanup Steps

Water and mold damage in a Back Bay, MA home

Mold Cleanup Steps

Mold cleanup can be a complicated process. If you have house mold in Back Bay, MA, you will likely need to enlist the help of mold remediation specialists. If your problem covers a space smaller than 10 square feet, however, you may be able to address it yourself. To do so, you will still need to follow certain steps. If at any point in the process you discover that the problem is bigger than you can resolve, contact the professionals immediately.

1. Wear Personal Protective Equipment

Before experts start a mold remediation job, they will don several items:

  • Protective coveralls
  • Goggles
  • Face mask with ventilator
  • Gloves
  • Rubber boots

If you are going to take on a cleanup job yourself, you must also wear protective gear. Try to avoid direct contact with the mold growth.

2. Use Detergent to Scrub

Getting rid of mold requires some elbow grease. Most surfaces can be cleaned with detergent, water and a scrub brush. If an item cannot be scrubbed or if you don’t know how to clean it, leave it to the professionals.

3. Dry Area Completely

It doesn't do any good to get rid of house mold if you leave the moisture that attracted it behind. After the surface is clean, make sure it is also completely dry.

4. Replace Unsalvageable Items

Mold tends to root itself into the pores of the surface on which it grows. If the fungus has infested an item too deeply, that item will need to be thrown out. Mold experts can help you distinguish between items that can be saved and those that must be replaced. If unsalvageable areas are part of the structure, such as walls or ceiling tiles, the work must be done professionally.

No matter the size of the problem, these four steps are essential to getting rid of house mold. If the problem is small, you may be able to clean it, but when in doubt, call the professionals.

How to Handle Fire Damage Restoration?

2/12/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Damage in a Downtown Boston Apartment Building

The fire engines have driven off. It's time for you to get into action to recover from a fire loss and restore your property. Having a fire cleanup action plan ensures you lessen the water damage, smoke damage, and soot damage. The damage may include fire damage from a fire in a home or commercial fire damage. Things get burnt beyond the usable state.

Tips to get you Moving Faster

Here are a few things to help you recover faster from a fire loss.

Is the fire damage critical? A fire in your business may require you to find alternative accommodation or work plans for a fire in business. The fire in a business may have caused irreparable damage to electronics and paperwork.

Do a quick evaluation. Which sections or items are completely gone and which ones are salvageable? A fire in business may require contacting more people. Differentiate between those that need urgent attention and those that can wait.
Determine if you need professional fire damage restoration services. A fire at a home may be easier to handle. A fire in business may require more consultations.

Besides fire loss, water and smoke damage also occur. Additionally, air quality goes to the dogs. Most firefighting is done using water. After a fire in a facility, excess water is left in the rooms and contents. Moisture is neither good on painted surfaces nor wood. Excess water destroys them. Also, in a commercial fire damage, water destroys documents and electronics.

Fire emits smoke which coats the nearest surface. This causes smoke damage and soot damage. Vacuuming, laundering and a little elbow grease may take care of soot damage. Expel out the bad air caused by smoke damage. Deodorize the room to improve air quality. Burning fire produces harmful gasses, smoke, and debris which lead to bad air quality. In some instances, getting the air quality back to normal may take several days.

Commercial fire damage is a double edged sword. A fire loss includes not only damage to property and investments, but also a loss of revenue due to closed operations. It is, therefore, crucial to get fire cleanup services as soon as possible.

How to Pick a Good Professional Fire Damage Restoration Service

To speed up the recovery from fire damage, engage a professional service. Consider a few things when selecting an excellent service to help you recover from a fire loss.

What kind of expertise and experience do they have? Request a quote or free survey and evaluate them as they evaluate your commercial fire damage. Ask for referrals of fire cleanup sites they have handled.

Do they provide assistance in dealing with the paperwork? You may be required to make reports to law enforcement, building committees or insurance companies. In commercial fire damage, you may also be required to inform stakeholders.
Besides fire cleanup, do they offer extra services such as smoke damage and soot damage cleanup, and water damage repair.

Responsiveness and availability: You cannot predict a fire in a facility. How fast is the response? Are they on call 24/7?

Whether it is a fire in a home or a fire in business, a quick response is essential to minimize loss. Besides fire damage, other areas need attention such as restoration from soot damage. Professional fire cleanup services will get the job done quicker.

5 Safety Tips for Cooking on a Grill

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Remember to keep grills 10 feet away

5 Safety Tips for Cooking on a Grill

Having a family barbecue and cooking on the grill in your backyard in Chinatown, MA can be a great way to spend your days during warmer weather. However, it can become dangerous if you’re not careful. A grill fire can happen quickly, so keep these tips in mind when you’re grilling to avoid injuries or damage to your property.

1. Keep the Grill Away From the House
While many people like to grill on a deck, this can lead to disaster if a fire occurs. It could spread to your house and cause a lot of fire and smoke damage. Fire remediation can be a time-consuming process and you could lose valuable and sentimental objects, so it is best to use your grill as far from the house as you can.

2. Only Use Fluids Made for Grills
If you use a charcoal grill, be sure to use only lighter fluid that is specifically made for this purpose. Other flammable liquids might not be safe for use around food. They can also more easily cause a grill fire. You should also never add more fluid after it has already been ignited.

3. Keep the Grill Clean
You should remember to clean your grill regularly. Built up fat and grease can cause a barbecue fire to flare up and become a safety hazard.

4. Open the Grill Before Turning On the Gas
If you have a gas grill, always open the lid of the grill before turning on the gas. If you turn the gas on while the grill is still closed, the gas will build up and can create a fireball when ignited.

5. Never Leave the Grill Unattended
When you are grilling, you should always make sure that someone is there to keep an eye on it. If a fire were to start while the grill was unattended, it could cause quite a bit of damage before you even notice.
Because cooking on a grill can be dangerous, you should always take proper precautions to avoid a grill fire. If you stay safe, grilling can be a fun and enjoyable pastime.

Types of Water Damage Coverage

More water damages are caused by broken pipes in South End, MA

How to Approach Damaged Pipes and Other Plumbing

Do you know when water damage to your business is covered by your existing insurance policy? Read on to better understand how to approach damaged pipes and other plumbing problems.

1. Floods or Leaks?

While most commercial insurance policies explicitly do not cover the sort of catastrophic flood event that results from extreme rainfall, tidal waves, or overflowing rivers, many other types of water damage are still covered by default plans. For example, leaking pipes and the damage they cause to the surrounding area are usually covered. As long as all issues are correctly documented and ascertained by your adjuster, your insurer will likely pay for a qualified professional water damage restoration service to bring your property back to its original condition.

2. Burden of Maintenance

However, under most default packages, your business damage will not be insured against flooding resulting from negligence. Broadly speaking, these cases usually come down to a lack of preventative maintenance. For example, if a few damaged pipes were noticeably leaking for more than a couple of weeks, it is no longer considered an unpreventable accident. In such cases, the business owner will be liable for all damages, since the flood did not result from a sudden event.

3. Other Exceptions

Coverage for fire suppression systems, such as water-based overhead sprinklers or powder-based devices, is usually more extensive than for the basic plumbing. This is because these systems are necessary for the buildings to be compliant with fire codes and because water does not move through these pipes regularly. While it is important to maintain your fire sprinklers in South End, MA, for safety and legal reasons, it is unlikely that you need an additional insurance coverage package to cover them. Mold damage resulting from moisture retained in the walls or floors is usually not covered, as this is a side effect from a more fundamental plumbing problem.

Don’t allow damaged pipes and other plumbing issues to linger and incur unnecessary costs. Prevent downtime by actively pursuing the appropriate maintenance remedies outlined above.

A Few Leading Fire Sources

Outdoor grills can be a cause of fire in your Back Bay, MA home

Leading Causes Of Fire Damage

Homeowners in Back Bay, MA, should be aware of a number of leading causes of fire damage. Understanding these statistics can help you prevent a home fire and make more informed decisions regarding your fire insurance policy.

1. Food Preparation

Cooking fires are the largest category of fires requiring a documented fire department response. Most of these involve a stove range of some kind, with electrical ranges being somewhat more dangerous than gas ranges on average. Outdoor grills also rank fairly high on the list of fire causes. Around a third of these cooking fires are the result of unattended flames or heating surfaces. Clothing ignition does not usually directly cause kitchen fires, but a fire that spreads to clothing has a strong correlation with personal injury.

2. Heating Systems

The second-most common category of home fire, at around 15% of total reported cases, involves heating elements. Many of these fires, around two-fifths, are due to smaller portable space heater units. The typical cause of a space heater fire is the proximity to combustibles such as upholstery or certain building materials. Another prominent issue is the lack of appropriate fire cleaning around fireplaces and chimneys, where certain flammable materials can build up over time.

3. Electrical Systems

Another leading cause of fire lies in the various faults that can appear in home wiring and related electrical systems. A majority of these occur either in lighting components or locations where electrical power is transferred, such as outlets or adapters. Homeowners should take special care to schedule an inspection for any exposed wiring or non-functional appliances, as these can lead to shorts that ignite surrounding flammable materials.

Even the most cautious homeowner can never completely eliminate the risk of a home fire. However, a little familiarity with some of the most common fire problems can help prevent injury and the need for professional fire restoration.

4 Techniques To Help Minimize Toilet Flooding

How To Prevent a Clogged Toilet and Avoid Unhygienic Leaks

A messy sewage backup can be an unsightly and disgusting problem for any South Boston, MA, business to endure. In addition to sanitary concerns, an overflow can also cause significant water damage that may require extensive cleanup and restoration initiatives. Fortunately, there are several techniques every business owner can employ to help prevent a clogged toilet and avoid unhygienic leaks.

1. Clean Restrooms Regularly

To help maintain a sanitary environment, it’s important to regularly clean restrooms. An efficient cleaning regimen can also help you identify and address potentially problematic leaks and drainage problems. To help avert both bacterial contamination and water damage, you should promptly use a plunger on slow drains and complete necessary repairs without delay.

2. Complete Routine Inspections

Like many other fixtures inside your building, commode components can wear out over time, compromising the unit’s ability to function properly. Examining internal components during routine maintenance inspections can help you locate and repair defective parts before a toilet overflow occurs.

3. Avoid Using Drain Cleaners Inside Toilets

A plunger is the most efficient means to address a clogged toilet. Although drain cleaners may seem like an adequate alternative, these solutions can compound the dilemma by damaging aging pipes and plumbing fixtures. For this reason, you should not attempt to remedy drainage issues by pouring chemicals into your facility’s commodes.

4. Encourage Proper Trash Disposal

Clogs can arise if paper towels, diapers and feminine products are flushed. To help avoid this problem and encourage proper trash disposal, you should have waste receptacles readily accessible throughout the restroom. You can also post signs in every stall to remind everyone what items are acceptable to flush.

Sewage exposure is an unhygienic situation that should be promptly addressed. Taking a proactive approach can help every business owner safeguard their plumbing system, reduce the risk of a clogged toilet and maintain a clean restroom for their staff and customers.

3 Steps To Take When a Toilet Overflows

Three Steps to Limit Damage While Attempting to Clear the Drain Line

A flooded toilet is caused by a blockage in the drain line. Backups can result in sewer damage at a residence in Boston, MA. A homeowner can try plunging the toilet or using an auger or snake. If these consumer-grade tools do not eliminate the clog, the homeowner should contact a plumber. Follow these three steps to limit damage while attempting to clear the drain line.

1. Prevent Overflow From Spreading

As soon as the toilet begins to overflow, a homeowner should use towels or a mop to prevent water from spreading. This measure can reduce the extent of water damage. Water from a toilet backup is contaminated and may cause irreparable sewer damage to carpet or other porous materials. It will be necessary to dispose of cleanup materials.

2. Snake the Toilet or Floor Drain

Obtain an auger or snake designed for use in toilets. Some snakes are hand cranked, while others feature a power drill attachment. Run the snake down the toilet, or remove the toilet and insert the snake directly into the floor drain. Depending on the location of a clog, the snake should penetrate and either break up or extract the blockage.

3. Snake the Drain Cleanout

If the clog is located further down the line, a homeowner can try snaking the drain clean out. The clean out is a cap on the main line located in a basement or crawlspace. Use a long pipe wrench to remove the cap. This tool is required to provide the necessary torque. Backup may flow out once the cap has been removed.

If a toilet still floods after a homeowner has taken all of these steps, it will be necessary to contact a plumber. Depending on the severity of sewer damage, it may also be advisable to contact a sewage company that provides water damage mitigation and restoration in Boston, MA.

How To Keep Your Restaurant Kitchen Mold-Free

11/29/2018 (Permalink)

Install a ventilation system in your Waterfront, MA kitchen

Enjoying the fruits of your hard-earned labor through the success of your Waterfront,MA, restaurant is always a rewarding feeling. However, coming across mold growth in your commercial kitchen can bring that contentment to a halt very quickly. Thankfully, there are various methods for keeping your restaurant kitchen clean and consistently mold-free.

Focus Your Attention On the Food Itself

Though there are many possible avenues for mold growth to occur, one of the most common causes of mold is through the food you bring into your kitchen. It can materialize easily on such foods as:

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Cheeses and other dairy products
  • Bread, and more

Therefore, it’s important to inspect your produce and other items before ever integrating them into your kitchen. Look for bruises, abrasions or already-apparent growths on your fruits and vegetables before purchasing. Check the expiration dates on packaged items and keep any open containers covered or sealed until use to prevent the onset of mold.

Keep a Reliable Ventilation System

Mold tends to emerge in areas that are dark, moist and generally untouched, meaning it can be hard to pinpoint the onset of mold until it’s too late. Help yourself and your kitchen crew by installing a ventilation system that reduces the high humidity in the kitchen, preventing potential mold from finding a suitable place to take root.

Remove and Restore Any Water Damage As It Occurs

Finding water damage in your restaurant would hardly be surprising, as running water is a consistent feature in any commercial kitchen with food prep spaces, dishwashing stations and more. For this reason, it’s important to always keep an eye out for continuously damp or wet areas that are the perfect breeding ground for mold. Hiring qualified mold remediation specialists to clear the area of any damage is key to a clean and healthy food prep environment.

When it comes to keeping the commercial kitchen of your Waterfront,MA, restaurant clean and mold-free, following these methods can help prevent any outbreak of unwanted mold growth and clear your kitchen for healthy food prep.

3 Things Not To Do After a Flood

11/15/2018 (Permalink)

Flooded home in Boston, MA

Avoid These Three Things

What you don't do after a flood can be as critical for your safety as the actions you take. It is important to remove flood water to limit water damage, but you should also avoid doing these three things after a flood in Boston,MA.

1. Risk Exposure to Tainted Water

Standing water resulting from a flood is considered Category Three water, or black water. It may contain contaminants such as chemicals, heavy metals, microbes, or solid waste. Keep unprotected skin from making contact with this infected water, and do not allow humans or animals to drink it.

If you attempt to mitigate damage in a flooded home, be sure to wear personal protective equipment, such as waterproof boots, hip waders, and heavy work gloves. If mold may be present, you should also wear a respirator.

2. Turn the Electricity On or Off

You may risk electrocution if you attempt to cross flood water to shut off a circuit breaker. There is no guarantee that water-damaged electrical components will function normally. Furthermore, neighbors may be running a generator improperly and back-feeding electricity into the grid.

A utility company technician or a licensed electrician can disconnect the electrical meter to ensure that there is no electrocution risk. You should also exercise caution when dealing with flood-damaged electronics, which are likely to short-circuit.

3. Delay Cleanup

The longer water is left standing or moisture lingers, the more likely mold growth will become. Mold can begin to grow in a flooded home in 24 to 72 hours. Contact a cleanup service to eliminate standing water.

Avoid unprotected exposure to flood water, the risk of electrocution, and the dangers of secondary damage. The best way to handle flood damage is to hire water damage mitigation and restoration specialists to clean, to disinfect, and to dry the flooded portion of your residence in Boston, MA.

Your Business’s Fire Exposure May Be Worse Than You Think

Fire break out in a Chinatown,MA building

No business owner wants to watch years of investment and effort go up in smoke. Still, fire damage in Chinatown, MA, is a somewhat common occurrence. If your business has gone through a fire, damage may be more extensive than you think.

Insurance May Not Cover All Damage

As a diligent business owner, you likely have insurance to protect your company from the effects of fires and other hazards. Unfortunately, following a fire, your insurance adjuster may inform you that your policy doesn’t cover certain types of fires. Commonly, fire policies exclude the following events:

  • Arson-related fires
  • Fires in vacant buildings

A Fire May Touch All Parts of Your Business

Fires can be unbelievably destructive. Once smoke clears and fire crews leave, you may notice damage to all parts of your business. Damaged structures may include office buildings, warehouses, storage facilities and distribution centers. Further, inventory, office supplies, computers and equipment may sustain fire damage as well.

Fire Containment Can Cause Additional Damage

The best way to limit damage during a business fire is to extinguish flames as quickly as possible. Still, fire mitigation often causes additional damage. As such, even if your business did not turn into a raging inferno, you may have to deal with the messes water, fire retardant and smoke leave behind. Fortunately, you probably don’t have to figure out cleanup on your own. A professional restoration technician from a reputable service likely has the equipment and knowledge to assess damage and recommend a restoration strategy.

While all fires are different, many in Chinatown, MA, have the potential to cause serious damage to your business. As a savvy entrepreneur, you spend a significant amount of time thinking of ways to attract new customers and improve your company’s products or services. Nonetheless, if you don’t have a plan for recovering from fire damage, you may be missing the mark.

What Sets Smart Smoke Detectors Apart?

10/18/2018 (Permalink)

Protect your South Boston, MA home with a smart smoke detector

Smart smoke detectors are a relatively new technology that can send push notifications to smartphones and may be controlled remotely. Find out how a next-generation smoke alarm can protect your home.

Smart Alarms Types

There are three types of smart fire safety devices:

  • Smart batteries
  • Smart detectors
  • Listeners

Smart batteries can be used in standard battery-powered smoke detectors or as backups in hardwired units. Smart detectors may cover more square-footage than standard alarms and can be controlled remotely. Listeners send alerts when any alarm is triggered.

Technological Differences

A smart battery is an affordable way to monitor your home while you are out. This technology functions like a nine-volt battery but has Wi-Fi connectivity to send notifications. You can silence battery-powered alarms remotely, but this function does not work for hardwired alarms with smart battery backups.

A smart smoke alarm also sends notifications, can be remotely controlled, and may be capable of monitoring more than one floor of your home. Some devices alert users to elevated carbon monoxide levels. Listeners send notifications whenever an alarm sounds in your home, though these devices are not capable of silencing alarms.

Smart Alarms Effectiveness

A single smart alarm may monitor an entire floor of your home, or more. If your home is spacious, you may want to just install a listener to notify you of any alarms.

Smart Detector Costs

Smart fire safety solutions are available in a wide price range:

  • The initial smart battery unit retails for about $35 with $15 replacements once or twice a year
  • Smart detectors start around $100
  • Listeners range from $50 to $100

Consider a smart smoke alarm or smoke detector device to receive timely push notifications about alarms. All of these devices can increase overall safety at your residence in South Boston, MA. If a fire results in damage, rely on the expertise of damage restoration professionals.

How To Choose Flood Coverage for Your Business

10/11/2018 (Permalink)

Water extraction at a Back Bay,MA prison

The National Flood Insurance Program offers both building property and personal property flood coverage for businesses. If your business is located in an area prone to flooding, chances are that you are required to have some type of flood policy. Commercial insurance policies that are specifically designed to cover single-peril events provide protection that your general property insurance does not.

What It Covers

The main differences between building property and personal property flood insurance are the relative mobility and permanence of the damaged item or material. Items that are part of the structure or are hooked up to it in some way are usually covered under the building property policy:

  • Building and its foundation
  • HVAC system
  • Plumbing and electrical systems
  • Fire sprinkler system
  • Installed design features such as carpeting or paneling
  • Machinery that is a permanent part of the structure, such as a walk-in freezer
  • Any apparatus attached to the outside of the building

Commercial insurance coverage for your personal property during a flood includes most items inside the structure. Furniture, appliances, rugs, inventory and equipment are typically covered under an NFIP policy through FEMA.

What It Doesn't Cover

Flood coverage is usually limited to a single event, the structure and the items within that structure. Secondary damage such as mold, which must be mitigated by mold remediation experts, is not covered under your company's flood policy. If the sewer backs up into your building, your commercial flood coverage does not pay for its cleanup, even if it was indirectly caused by flooding. Anything outside the building is not covered, and neither are the costs of keeping your business going. It's a good idea to talk to your insurance agent about adding policies that cover what the flood policies don't to your portfolio.

When your business in Back Bay, MA, floods due to a storm or natural disaster, you will be glad you have a policy with the NFIP. These commercial insurance policies are designed to help make your business whole again.

Basement Floods: The 4 Essential Steps to Mitigating Further Loss

10/4/2018 (Permalink)

Basement flood damage in Boston, MA

A basement flood can be devastating for homeowners, and when left to develop, flooding creates a multitude of issues from mold growth to structural problems. Taking the appropriate steps, as outlined below, can help mitigate further damage and get you on the path toward restoration.

1. Take Appropriate Safety Precautions

Whether sewage backup or a broken pipe causes a flood, water can pose significant risks to homeowners. After a flood, there is an increased risk of slip and fall injuries and electrocution. Therefore, turn off the electricity in the area and watch your footing. Additionally, if you are dealing with sewage, invest in protective clothing before handling any affected items.

2. Remove Standing Water

Whether flooding is less than an inch or over a foot, it can be challenging to begin the cleanup process without removing the water first. Depending on the depth of the water, it may be more practical to rent a sump pump which can be faster than a wet vac alone.

3. Dry the Area

Quickly drying the area is paramount to reducing the risk of mold development. Mold can form and begin spreading within the first 24 to 48 hours after the initial water damage. Open doors and windows and use air movers or fans to help with air circulation. The use of dehumidifiers may also be helpful to remove excessive moisture in the air.

4. Call for Assistance

Some floods require massive amounts of cleanup and can be a struggle without the proper tools. If your flooded basement is a little too daunting, you may want to reach out to professionals in Boston, MA, especially if the issue stems from a broken water or sewer line and requires a pipe repair.

Flooding is a nightmare for most homeowners, especially when it occurs in the basement. Fortunately, the cleanup process is manageable. However, it is important to remember that time is of the essence, and it may be beneficial to seek assistance for water damage where structural integrity and mold growth are concerns.

How to Be Proactive about Plumbing Issues in Your Commercial Business

9/24/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage in South Boston, MA

A broken pipe or cracked water main can be significant plumbing problems for business owners; however, while the plumbing issues can be detrimental for a property, the level of stress and pressure on the business owner can also present risks. It is better to manage property effectively and properly to minimize the chances of one of these major catastrophes.

1. Preventative Maintenance

Preventative maintenance is one of the most important things a building owner can do to protect their property, the tenants, and employees. Preventative maintenance refers to the routine inspection of plumbing, sprinklers, pumps, and drains. While the inspection schedule for any of these items may vary, you may want to aim for at least one full-scale inspection per year.

2. Fix Minor Issues Before They Become Major Ones

While performing preventative maintenance is a wonderful prevention tool, it means nothing if issues are discovered and not addressed. The whole point in performing inspections is to find and resolve issues while they are still small, as opposed to waiting until the issue manifests into plumbing problems that can temporarily close down the business. Fixing these minor issues before they become major ones is just good business sense.

3. Find Backup You Can Count On

As being proactive about plumbing issues involves routine maintenance, it may be in your best interest to find a plumbing specialist in the South Boston, MA, area that you can rely on and trust. You may want to speak with several companies and individuals before deciding because, as you will likely be doing business together for years to come, you want to feel comfortable in your decision.

Plumbing problems pose a significant concern for most business owners because of the expense and potential recovery time; however, if owners can commit to performing annual inspections and fixing small issues before they become substantial issues, then they may not have to spend too much time worrying about their potential risk.

Your Guide to Roof Repair After Hail and Heavy Winds Damage Your Shingles

9/17/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage on ceiling in Financial District, MA

Everyone loves a good end-of-summer storm, but when the nights grow cooler and the winds grow stronger, those nice summer storms turn into damaging tempests. Hail, heavy winds and torrential rains may be exciting to watch from within, but they're harmful to a home's structure. If your roof was recently the victim of hail and wind damage, you may be able to get away with a small roof repair—or you may be forced to invest in roof replacement. A quality inspection can give you an indication of which you will need:

  • Have your roof tested to determine its existing condition and life expectancy.
  • Have a moisture survey of your roof done.
  • Let a professional roofer assess the extent of the damage—is it just a patch or it is the entire roof?
  • Request a weather impact condition report to see if your roof was even subject to the hail.

When searching for a roofing company, make sure that it offers each of the above services.

A Quality Inspection Is Key

Roof repair goes beyond patching a damaged area and calling it a day. If you want to ensure that your roof lasts for years into the future, and if you want to preserve the structural integrity of your home, you need to make sure that the company you hire actually fixes the issue and doesn't just cover it.

Each of the tests listed above is performed to measure the reliability of your roof's remaining materials. The last thing you want to do is pay thousands of dollars to have your roof re-shingled only to discover that the core of the roof damage lies along the deck. If that were to happen, you would be forced to remove the shingles you paid thousands of dollars to have installed, rip up the deck, reinstall a new deck and reinstall the shingles—a process which would cost you an additional good sum of money.

If your home has extensive roof damage because of hail and heavy winds, request a quality inspection before investing in roof repair. Talk to your Financial District, MA, storm damage restoration team about the importance of a quality inspection.

3 Steps To Take Before Mold Remediation Specialists Arrive

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

Mold damage behind walls in a Boston South, MA home

When your home floods, the subsequent water damage can lead to black mold growth if not remedied fairly quickly. If you notice that mold has already started to grow, the remediation specialists in Boston South, MA, will need to fix not only the water damage but also the mold problem. Before they arrive for water and mold cleanup, however, there are three steps you need to take.

1. Turn Water Off

One thing your situation does not need is more water flow to the area. Unless you know specifically where the leak is coming from, you should just turn the water off for that whole section of your home. You may not be able to undo the damage that has already occurred, but you can prevent further damage by cutting water off at the source.

2. Close Doors and Windows

The first instinct of many homeowners when they have a moisture problem is to open up all the windows and doors and get air flow going through the house. If you have a black mold problem, however, this increased air flow just spreads the problem. You may start with mold in one room but it may grow into the hallway and surrounding areas.

3. Turn Off HVAC System

Likewise, your HVAC system can also contribute to the distribution of mold spores throughout the house. When mold is actually growing in a particular area, the concentration of spores in the air is higher. You want to keep that mold concentration contained as much as possible. Shut air intake vents and turn the system off to prevent an epidemic of mold growth through your entire home.

Mold cleanup is generally a job for the professionals, but you can make their job easier by keeping the black mold from spreading into other areas of your home. By shutting off the air flow and the water supply, you can help keep the problem contained.

Take Steps to Prevent Mold Growth

8/30/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Boston Downtown / Back Bay / South Boston cleaning a mold damage in a home.

Intrusion of water into your building can result in mold growth. Water intrusions can occur due to storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth.

If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health threat.

If there is an ongoing moisture problem in the building, it is important to be alert for:

  • The presence of visible mold.
  • Strong musty odors which may indicate mold is present.
  • Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth.
  • Excessive humidity.

To control mold growth in your business, I offer you the following tips:

  • Repair leaky plumbing and leaks in the foundation of your building
  • Reduce moisture with increased surface temperatures or reduced humidity levels in the air. To increase surface temperatures, insulate or increase air circulation. To reduce humidity, repair leaks, increase ventilation if outside air is cold and dry or use a dehumidifier.
  • Keep heating, ventilation and air conditioning drip pans clean, flowing properly and unobstructed
  • Maintain indoor humidity below 50 percent
  • Perform regular inspections and maintenance on buildings and heating and air conditioning equipment
  • Clean and dry wet or damp spots within 1-2 days
  • Provide adequate drainage around the foundation of your building. Regularly maintain roof gutters, and ensure that water does not collect near the foundation
  • Insulate windows, walls, pipes, roofs, exterior, floors and other cold surfaces to reduce condensation

Hidden Secondary Damage in the Basement of this Boston Home

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

The broken pipe because of a fire.

Sometimes when responding to a fire loss, the fire often causes secondary damage to the property's mechanical systems. This PEX piping burst as a result of a basement fire sending water spraying directly onto the underside of the hardwood floors above.

Broken Pipe from Fire Damage

Upon initial inspection, the floors upstairs were all showing signs of cupping and not much in the way of water as the fire was extinguished in the basement. It is crucial that a restoration company be thorough in our inspections to ensure we address all damages both visible as well hidden issues that often go undetected.

Also, note that several electrical wires were damaged leaving the home disabled electrically. To get around this problem we installed a separate power panel to provide power for us to begin mitigation and drying.

Restoring Your Home After Water Damage

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

When a home or business is invaded by water, whether it is flooding or an overflow, early mitigation is essential. Correct water cleanup will involve several steps to ensure the property is restored to the condition it was before the flood damage. The process involves drying and decontaminating the home or business as well as the contents. Sometimes it is not possible for everything to be saved. Some items may have to be disposed of due to the water damage.

Evaluate the Damage

Evaluating flood damage is important to ensure that all losses are realized. It will be necessary to contact the insurance company, and the damage will need to be documented. There are areas of the home where water can be hiding that one might not realize. It is not uncommon for water to seep into HVAC systems, behind walls and baseboards, and into electrical outlets. Water will spread to dry areas, and a watermark is not always visible.

Determining the extent of the damage is important for water mitigation. This aids in deciding the method of drying and decontaminating the home or business. What are the types of damage?

  • Class One – Water is only in a small area and only a small amount has been absorbed by the contents or floors in the building.
  • Class Two – Only a room or two has water damage.
  • Class Three – The entire building has sustained flood damage.
  • Class Four – The water in the home or water in a business includes “deep pockets of saturation” and will require special drying methods for restoration.

Why Should You Remove Damaged Items

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

Often everything cannot be saved during flood damage. It will be necessary to remove everything that is damaged beyond repair such as sheet rock, papers, furniture, electronics, and other items. Sometimes carpet can be dried and disinfected, but often it will need to be replaced.

What Methods are Used for Drying?

Restoration will include several methods depending on the classification of the water damage. It is extremely important not to wait too long to begin water damage restoration. Mold can begin to form quickly. When water in the home or water in a business needs to be removed from carpets, a wet vac is handy. They can be used for removing surface water. However, they will not keep water from seeping up walls or into sub-floors.

It may be necessary to use a pump during water cleanup. The water is generally pumped from the home or business and stored for disposal. A dehumidifier is also used to reduce the humidity levels in the building. This will prevent the growth of mildew and mold.

Sometimes the water damage is so extensive that it is necessary to contact a restoration company. Water mitigation will reduce the possibility of additional damage. Air scrubbers and air movers may be necessary to help the drying process. Moisture meters can be used during cleanup when there has been water in the home or water in a business. They aid in locating moisture than cannot be seen. Water mitigation includes utilizing more sophisticated means of detecting moisture. This helps to prevent objects that were not initially damaged by water from being ruined as a result of moisture. Expensive or antique furniture and wood floors can warp when exposed to moisture for a period of time.

A thermo-hygrometer is another device similar to a moisture meter although it can perform another testing as well. It can reduce the time needed to find moisture in an area. Using a thermo-hygrometer during water cleanup in areas such as crawl spaces can help by detecting excess moisture. This moisture could cause damage to the structure of a building.

The most important thing to remember when flood damage is experienced is to act quickly to prevent further damage to the property. Whether water in the home or water in a business is only a few inches or several feet, it is vital to ensure that everything is free of moisture.

What To Do When Your Business Loses Power

8/20/2018 (Permalink)

Wall and floor damage after a storm in a South Boston, MA home

Storm season in South Boston, MA, can cause unplanned interruptions in your utility service. When power lines are down, you need a way to continue your business without losing important information. A power outage doesn't have to bring your operations to a halt. Here are three ways you can continue working even if you are temporarily without your normal power or internet sources.

1. Seek Alternate Locations

One convenient thing about the internet is that you can access it from almost anywhere. If you know your business is going to be without power for a few hours, use some creative restructuring to get work done. Allow employees to work from home until power is restored in your building. Take a working lunch to a restaurant with a strong Wi-Fi signal. There are many places where you can work comfortably while technicians are repairing power lines and restoration experts are fixing anything wrong with the building.

2. Use Backup Power

If you are able to stay in the building to work, a backup power source can help you do so. A portable generator or battery backup can get you through a temporary power outage. Use an uninterrupted power supply to avoid losing data on an unsaved document during a sudden outage.

3. Follow Internet Tips

If you have a data plan on your phone, you can use your plan as Wi-Fi by turning on the personal hotspot. This can help you finish what you have started if you experience a momentary lapse of service in your building. If power is limited, make sure that you only using the essential services you need. You may be tempted to log on to check social media or play games while you are waiting on the power to come back, but this can drain the small reserves you have quickly. Conserve energy by only using what you need until you have full service again.

A power outage can be frustrating, but it doesn't have to be devastating. Having a backup plan can save data and allow your business to continue functioning.

Insured: How To Know You Are Covered in a Flood

8/13/2018 (Permalink)

Water flooding in a Boston, MA prison

Your homeowners' policy is likely designed to take care of accidents that were unable to be foreseen. While it can secure against most of the things that can go wrong with your home in Boston, MA, you may need additional insurance for certain issues. Sometimes your basement flood can be covered, and sometimes it cannot.

What Isn't Covered?

There are several things your homeowners' policy probably doesn't insure:

  • Flood damage
  • Issues resulting from negligence or improper maintenance
  • Backup of municipal sewer lines
  • Repair of the flood's source

You may have to purchase additional insurance coverage for some of these issues. The cost of some of the repairs, however, such as repairs done by restoration professionals for problems caused by poor maintenance, will probably have to be paid out of pocket.

What Is Covered?

If the accident that causes the damage is sudden and unavoidable, such as a water heater that breaks and causes a basement flood, your homeowners' policy will probably protect you. If your floor or a wall needs to be replaced, your dwelling insurance can take care of it. If items are ruined in the flood, the personal property clause in the policy can help you pay for their replacement after the deductible is met.

What Additional Protection Is Needed?

If you experience frequent flooding in Boston, MA, it is a good idea to purchase flood insurance. Water backup coverage can help you when your basement is flooded by a backed-up sewer line or a clogged pipe outside your home. Talk to your insurance agent about other options that may be helpful for you to have to protect your home.

If a sudden accident causes a basement flood, a lot of the damage is probably insured by your homeowners' policy. Some special circumstances might require further coverage, though. It is important to make sure you understand your policy and have the right one in place before a problem occurs.

Properly Maintain an Emergency Sump Pump

7/26/2018 (Permalink)

Properly maintain your sump pump to ensure back up after a flood in the Boston area

If you live in an area of Boston, MA, where heavy rains and flooding are likely, you should become familiar with the value of maintaining flood equipment, such as a backup sump pump. This appliance protects homes with poor drainage, foundation weaknesses, and aging basement walls.

Prepare for Action

When your emergency sump pump is in top condition, it may be able to remove two feet of water at a time from your basement. Keep it ready for action with the following maintenance.

Quarterly Maintenance

• Rinse pump inlet screen and remove dust or debris.
• Visually inspect power cord and power connection.
• Run water through to make sure the float rises, and the pump turns on.

Annual Maintenance

• Schedule professional inspections and maintenance for the sump.
• Read your owner's manual for DIY maintenance, such as greasing pump bearings.
• Remove the pump to thoroughly inspect and clean it. Make repairs as necessary.
• Clean out the rest of the equipment.
• Reassemble the machine.

Protect Your Primary Sewage System

When your primary sewage piping or sump system is at risk, a back up battery pump is crucial. This pump kicks in when water levels are high. It keeps your home safe when too much rain water and debris has overwhelmed your existing drainage system. An emergency battery-powered pump can keep your home safely dry when the power goes out. It may sit on the shelf, unused for months or years at a time, but with appropriate maintenance, it will be ready when you need it.

If a sump pump isn't a possibility, you may be able to work with a remediation professional. These experts often have a truck-mounted trash pump, in addition to the sump.

Act Immediately

The immediate use of this equipment can prevent serious damages, mold growth, and the need for expensive repairs. Protect your Boston, MA, home and family from standing water, mold growth, and other flooding damages with a second layer of protection.

4 Ways to Clean Belongings After a Fire

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

Cleaning belongings after a fire to restore back to normal conditions

Watching your Boston, MA, home burn can leave you with an ache in your heart. Not only do you have to deal with a massive insurance claim, but there's a good chance you'll end up losing some of your treasured possessions. When you work with a residential fire damage cleanup crew, some of your smoke-damaged belongings may get saved. Content cleaning is a delicate art that can take the following shapes.

1. Dry-Cleaning: Clothes, furniture and other porous items often have to be cleaned with a dry-cleaning method. This helps remove the smoke and soot that built up during the fire. If you try to wash your clothes on a normal cycle, you may end up causing more damage. The soot has to be removed from the textiles before you can return to a typical cleaning method.

2. Ultrasonic: Non-porous items can go through a more vigorous cleaning than materials that soak up water. The ultrasonic treatment incorporates ultrasound and a cleaning solvent to rid your belongings of soot.

3. High-Pressure Water: If the ultrasonic machine is not big enough for some of your non-porous furniture, the professionals may choose to use high-pressure water. This only works on non-porous items because they won't soak up the excess water.

4. Odor Removal: Smoke isn't the only thing that can cling to your possessions. The odor after a fire can be a long-term reminder of what you went through. After dry-cleaning, ultrasonic or high-pressure water methods have been put in place, you may want to do some sort of odor removal too. Professionals often use thermal fogging or ozone treatments to rid your home of the funky smell.

After a fire, you want to get everything back to normal as soon as possible. This means you need to clean your belongings. If the cleaning process takes longer than expected, you can also use content storage to get your dirty, smelly items out of the house until they're clean.

Understanding Mold Growth in Commercial Property

7/19/2018 (Permalink)

Understanding mold in your commercial property is key

Upon noticing the smell or sight of black mold in your Boston, MA, business, you probably wonder what caused it to appear. Despite so many different varieties, molds have a single process of growing and spreading. Knowledge of how and why these fungi infest businesses teaches how to prevent them from taking over yours.

Knowing the Water Where Mold Often Grows

Mold needs time, temperature, food, and moisture to thrive. A moisture problem is often the cause of mold growth. Water that gets into building materials, utilities or flooring comes from plenty of sources:

• Burst or leaking pipe
• Flooding from nearby overflowing bodies of water
• Humid weather
• Broken supply line
• Defective sprinkler systems
• Clogged gutter drainage systems
• Defective HVAC systems accumulating condensation

Once identified, any broken utility or component should be fixed by an appropriate professional. This prevents additional water damage and the mold that comes with it.

Preventing Spores From Finding Ideal Conditions

Microscopic spores float through the air looking for a suitable place to settle. Even if the spores are floating in the air of a room, no mold species will grow without a place to settle that has food and water. The parasitic nature of black mold and other organisms means that they can be stopped from being a problem by denying environments they desire.

Treating the Mold That Grows

Proactive water cleanup can prevent the need for mold cleanup. Fixing any existing water damage stops the airborne mold from ever finding a place to survive inside your property.

Contacting a professional water cleanup crew with mold expertise is advised to make sure any water is completely removed with the power of their industrial-grade tools. Additionally, experts can find mold and water hiding in unnoticeable locations that most people miss. This prevents mold from quickly recolonizing.

Getting a Hold on Mold

Black mold may seem daunting at first, but prevention can make it seem like a nonissue. Even if mold does take advantage of a water accident at your property, there are ways to remove it without much hassle.

Is Flood Water Safe To Remove After a Pipe Breaks?

6/21/2018 (Permalink)

Pipe Break causing a flood in this Boston home

When water floods your home, how do you know if it is safe to clean up on your own? This is the question thousands of homeowners ask themselves every year after waters spread their way across the floor of the property. To help answer the question, the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification has categorized contaminated water levels into three degrees of danger.

Category One

When a water supply line breaks in the kitchen, laundry room, or bathroom, the resulting liquid spreading across the floor is considered “clean” or “white.” Category one water is generally deemed harmless to humans and can frequently be cleaned up by the homeowner if caught before the water level gets to more than an inch or two. Other examples of white water can include an overflowing bathtub or a broken faucet.

Category Two

White water that sits for more than 24 hours can move into category two because it is then considered contaminated water. This type of liquid is often called “grey water” and is considered unsafe for humans or pets. Other ways white water can become contaminated include coming in contact with the following household items:

• Grease
• Food
• Bleach
• Cleaning supplies

Because category two liquid is unsafe, it should be handled by a specially trained water restoration team.

Category Three

Category three water is classified as grossly unsafe and extreme caution should be used when encountering the liquid. Often referred to as “black water,” this type of unclean water is often filled with fecal matter, dangerous chemicals, and toxic materials. Natural disasters, overflowing rivers, and broken sewers can flood your home with this unhealthy type of liquid. Because of the unique nature of the contaminants in black water, only trained professionals should remove this fluid from your home.

IICRC’s List

Flood waters can be frustrating to deal with, and the uncertainty of knowing what type of water you are standing in can be frightening. With the IICRC’s list, you can feel more secure in dealing with different types of contaminated water in Boston, MA.

Your Guide to Bathroom Maintenance

6/16/2018 (Permalink)

Regular Maintenance for your commercial bathroom will reduce damages.

Whether you are dealing with a clogged toilet or a leaky faucet in your commercial building in Boston, MA, chances are you wouldn't mind some help keeping your bathroom in top shape. These seemingly minor bathroom problems can lead to overflow issues, water damage and messy spaces. You can work with a commercial water restoration team after your bathroom creates a watery mess, or you can use these tips to avoid the problem.

Employees and customers can throw the wrong thing down your toilets. When this happens, a blockage may create the perfect environment for toilet overflow. You can prevent this issue from happening by doing the following:

• Keep waste baskets in every stall.
• Offer a thin toilet paper.
• Request patrons throw paper towels and other non-toilet-friendly items in the trash through signage.

These simple steps may help you keep your toilets from getting blocked up.

A clogged toilet is not the only bathroom issue you need to be concerned with. Faucet leaks could be another problem. You can switch to automatic faucets to reduce the risk of people simply leaving the water running. Scheduling regular inspections and having a plumber on hand can help you fix actual leaks.

Another common problem in public bathrooms is mold growth, grime buildup and other unsavory cleanliness issues. If the toilet backups include sewage, you need to make sure your cleaning crew uses the proper solutions to rid the bathroom of the accompanying germs. Controlling moisture can help you avoid mold growth. If you notice a musty smell, you should try to call in a knowledgeable cleanup crew as soon as possible or the mold could spread.

The bathroom in your commercial building, whether open to employees or customers, may need some maintenance to keep it in working order. Many commercial restrooms have reoccurring issues with a clogged toilet, leaking pipes and dirt buildup, but yours doesn't have to.

The Invisible Impact of Smoke Damage

5/24/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke Damage can be visible on your commercial building after a fire breaks out close to your business

No property owner wants to experience a commercial building fire. The fire can be devastating, not only because of the damage the fire does but from the odor and discoloration the smoke leaves behind. Furthermore, while the building is closed, you can lose a great deal of money. However, before you hire a professional service in Boston, MA, to begin smoke cleaning, it can be important to understand exactly how the smoke damage can impact your building, your clients, and you.

Invisible Assailants

Although smoke can often be seen during a fire, the damage causing the lingering smoke odor can often be a result of components that are not always visible. These can include:

• Invisible and toxic gasses can contaminate the air. These gases can include carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and phosgene. The gases can be a highly foul-smelling contribution to the smoke.

• Particles of carbon called soot can cover the floors and walls. The fragments can float long distances from the fire and be deposited in unusual areas such as the cracks of bricks or under the heads of nails.

• Vapors of poisonous smoke can look like mist. The gaseous droplets can be poisonous and can cover items in your building with contaminates.

Covert Particles

Signs of smoke are often evident after a fire. Black stains covering the walls and ceiling of some rooms, soot covered floors, and an unpalatable odor are often visible signs of pollution left behind by the fire. But the acrid smell that lingers for weeks after a fire is often caused by a cloud of invisible particles left over from the flames. That is why smoke cleaning can be a tedious and unpleasant job.

Timely Restoration

Removing the smoke damage that can be seen may be easily done by a fire restoration and smoke cleaning team. On the other hand, removing the often acrid and unpleasant odor left behind can be difficult even when using scientific means. Sadly, the longer the odor lingers, the more difficult it can become to remove it completely.

5 Things You Need to Know About Mold

5/14/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can grow and spread in your Boston home if moisture or water is present.

As a homeowner, you don't want to hear that there is black mold in your living space. The thought of mold growth may terrify you. It's true that this fungus can be a problem in Boston, MA, but the spores themselves really aren't that scary. If you talk to any residential mold professional, you'll learn a few important things about this growth.

1. It is everywhere. Mold already exists in your home. This doesn't mean you need to call in a remediation team right now, but it does mean that the spores naturally occur both indoors and outdoors. You can never have a mold-free house because the spores are always around.

2. It requires water. While the spores may be everywhere, mold cannot thrive in every location. Water is a key ingredient for mold survival. If you have been dealing with a moisture problem in your house, even just high humidity, you may be inviting colonies of mold.

3. It can travel easily. Part of the reason spores can be everywhere is because they travel through water, in the air and on humans and animals. You may introduce mold to your home without realizing that a few spores caught a ride on your shoes.

4. It may have a smell. Some molds, particularly black mold, are associated with a musty odor. This aroma may be what clues you in to your growth. However, this fungus can exist without a tell-tale smell.

5. It needs to be dealt with quickly. Because mold is everywhere and can spread easily, a mold cleanup crew should be called as soon as you suspect the growth is in your house. If not taken care of right away, it may spread to other rooms and the remediation process may grow.

Black mold is something that no one wants to find in their home, but sometimes it finds a way to show up. The more you know about mold the better prepared you will be to take care of the problem.

Commercial Mold Remediation in 6 Steps

4/18/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Mold Remediation in Boston

Commercial buildings that experience a water leak or other moisture issues may be at risk for developing black mold. It is a good idea to contact a certified company that can provide testing, cleanup, and restoration services. Here are six steps involved in most commercial mold remediation:

1. Resolve the underlying moisture problem. Mold will return unless you eliminate the presence of moisture within a structure. Contact a plumber or have a roofer fix leaks prior to mold cleanup.

2. Contain the affected area. You can perform simple containment strategies yourself, such as turning off the HVAC system. Experts may perform limited or full containment depending on the extent of the contamination.

3. Determine the type of mold and extent of growth. Mold specialists can identify black mold or other types of mold and help you determine whether you should evacuate employees.

4. Plan a remediation strategy. Commercial cleanup professionals should set up a schedule for remediation. This process may take some time, depending on the extent of the contamination.

5. Clean and thoroughly dry affected areas and items. Experts will thoroughly clean and dry areas affected by mold. Remediation may involve replacing building materials and contents.

6. Restore a commercial property. Once the property has been cleaned and dried, you can move cleaned or new items into the affected area and resume ordinary functions.

If black mold or any other type of mold is growing in your commercial property in Boston, MA, you should contact a commercial mold cleanup service as soon as possible. The sooner you eliminate the mold, the less likely it will be to spread. If you want to work with a single commercial damage restoration provider to make sure the mold is gone and get back to business as soon as possible, you should look for a company that also offers mold remediation services.

The Dangers of Secondary Water Damage After a Flood

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

Water Loss clean up in Boston MA

If your business experiences flooding, whether from a burst pipe, overflowing sewer or an extreme weather event, you may think only areas that are underwater will be damaged. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. The flood water in your building can do a lot of primary damage, but the high humidity conditions inside your business caused by the evaporation of flood water can lead to serious secondary damage, such as the growth of black mold. Hiring a professional trained in water damage restoration in Boston, MA, can ensure that the water is extracted and your building thoroughly dried before more damage can be done.

Why Does Secondary Damage Occur?

When a building floods, the large amount of water begins to evaporate, creating high humidity conditions. This atmospheric moisture can saturate walls, cabinets and shelves and condense on metal surfaces. The longer these moist conditions persist, the more damage they can do.

What Are the Consequences of Secondary Damage?

Prolonged exposure to damp conditions can cause serious deterioration of many building materials:

• Drywall crumbles.
• Plaster can crack and crumble.
• Plywood and wood swells, warps and cracks.
• Metal begins to rust.
• Black mold grows on virtually any moist surface.

If flood water is not extracted in a timely fashion, these secondary effects can impact structural beams and concrete, weakening your building’s structure and threatening your place of business.

What Can You Do About It?

Don’t wait to take action. As soon as conditions are safe, contact an experienced water damage restoration professional in Boston, MA, to assess the situation and formulate a plan. The more quickly water is extracted from the premises, the lower restoration costs will be in the long run. Once pumps and vacuums have been employed to remove excess water, specialized industrial air movers and dehumidifiers will ensure there’s no lingering moisture to deteriorate materials or foster black mold growth.

Best Tips for Getting Rid of Bad Smells After Flooding

4/4/2018 (Permalink)

Special Drying System after Storm Water Damage

Flood water can leave your Boston, MA, home with a funky smell. Whether the flood introduced mold growth or caused a sewer backup, you don't want to let the bad smell linger in your home any longer than necessary. It can be hard to completely remove the odors on your own. After all, it could take some high-quality equipment to really rid your home of the aromas. When you want to do more than cover up a funky odor, you need to turn to water and storm damage remediation experts. Consider these tips as the professionals get to work:

• Find the Source: Bed smells usually have a source. When you find the source, such as sewage loss or mold growth, you can address the problem better.
• Get Rid of Water: Before you can really take care of the scent problem, you need to make sure the water issue is cleared up. Removing excess water from your home can also help you avoid further damage.
• Disinfect the Area: Using a powerful cleaner can help you kill the fungus or bacteria causing the smells. If you don't clean the area, you may only end up covering up the unwelcoming odors.
• Deodorize the Area: After a thorough cleaning, you can start the deodorization process. Your cleanup team may want to spray the area directly.
• Deodorize the Air: Because scents can waft throughout a home, you may also need to use a mixture to absorb the smells from the air. You may be able to use items you have on hand, such as cat litter, vinegar or baking soda, to freshen the air.

3 Tips To Help You Deal With Toilet Overflow

3/22/2018 (Permalink)

Bathroom Water Loss in Boston

Have you ever been standing in the bathroom of your South Boston, MA, house watching in terror as the toilet water continued to rise? Calling in a team of sewer damage restoration specialists can help you handle any toilet overflow problems you have. You can also check out these tips to prepare for the professionals.

1. Understand Why It's Happening

Getting to the bottom of a problem can help you better deal with the issue at hand. There are typically three reasons toilet water comes over the edge: There's a clog that's not allowing the water to escape through the plumbing, there's an error with the float mechanism, or there's a sewer backup. You may be able to solve the first two issues on your own. However, a backup can be a serious problem that requires the help of your sewer company and restoration experts.

2. Stop the Immediate Overflow

A flooded toilet is typically not a pretty sight. You can stop the water from coming over the edge by turning off the toilet's water supply. Check for a valve near the bottom side of the bowl, and turn it counterclockwise.

If you can't find a valve, take off the tank cover. Raise up the float ball or float cup. If you lift it high enough, the water should stop running. If you still can't manage to get the water to stop running, turn off the water supply to your whole house. After you turn off the water, the only reason your toilet would still be overflowing is if there is sewer damage.

3. Get Rid of the Blockage

Assuming you were able to get the water to stop flowing, you now have to get rid of the blockage that caused the problem in the first place. You can use a plunger to dislodge the blockage. You can also call in a plumber if you'd rather not deal with the problem yourself.

Toilet overflows can be a sign of sewer damage. You should try to take care of the problem as quickly as possible.

Skilled professionals can determine whether mold growth poses a risk to any member of the household and limit your family's exposure.

• Aspergillus is a common genus of mold found on food such as bread or potatoes and in HVAC systems. This type of mold is highly aerobic and depends on the presence of oxygen in order to thrive.
• Cladosporium is black or green mold growth that often forms on air ducts, toilets, or painted surfaces in high humidity or when excessive moisture is present.
• Black mold is a type of mold that is known to cause problems for residents in homes with substantial growths. The scientific name for black mold is stachybotrys chartarum. This type of mold should be identified and handled only by mold experts.
• White mold tends to be in the early stages of growth. A reputable service should be able to prevent this type of mold from continuing to grow into mature colonies. White or light grey molds on plants are mildew – a related type of fungus.

These are just a few of the major types of mold growth that you may see in a home in the wake of water damage. You may attempt to identify visible mold in your home, but when it comes to determining the real risk posed by mold and eliminating its presence, you should rely on trained hygienists and remediation experts in Boston, MA. How To Identify Roof Hail Damage

3/15/2018 (Permalink)

There is no question hail can cause a lot of damage. While some people pay closer attention to their cars or other personal items, others remember how important it is to inspect roofs for further damage. Consider how costly any kind of damage to your roof or ceiling can be. Your business deserves a thorough check by a professional service after a hailstorm.

1. Asphalt Roof Damage

With an asphalt roof, you may find the shingles look shiny after a hailstorm. This is due to hail damage. The roof damage itself will often present as random denting. You may feel the dent is too soft to the touch or you may see a loss of granules. Additionally, the felt may be exposed.

2. Wooden Roofs

Generally, the impacts of hail damage look randomized. You will not usually find a pattern, and you may see split or cracked shingles. When it comes to shingles, they are often an orange or brown color when split. There will often be impact and dent marks over the wood. While roofs can be damaged through other types of weather, it is relatively easy to discern hail damage. Serious splits will have sharp corners and edges rather than the regular wear and tear of a shingle that was damaged over time.

3. Flood Water

Roof damage, especially during rainy seasons will often lead to water damage. Water can seep through the roof and into the attic. If you find wet insulation or mold growth in the attic itself, then you may have a compromised roof. Although it is easier to miss water damage in the attic, you should always check after a large storm.

After hail has caused damage to your Boston, MA, business, it is important to have it taken care of quickly. This type of damage can only get worse over time. In order to work through mitigation quickly, a restoration company can assess and work through the process with you.

What To Do About Mold in Air Ducts

2/20/2018 (Permalink)

When cool air moves through your air ducts on warm days, this can cause water to condense inside the vent. When this happens, moisture becomes trapped in the ducts, creating an ideal environment for mold to grow. Moreover, since mold spores can be airborne, it is common for them to spread through your business via the vents. This is why it’s important to take care of HVAC cleaning on a regular basis. This will help keep mold from growing and invading your workspace. Here are the steps on how to handle this problem before it worsens.

Dealing With the Mold

• Have the mold tested
• Identify the cause of the mold
• Check air vents insulation to make sure the mold hasn’t spread
• Clean the interior vents

Cleaning the Ductwork

It’s not always easy to take on cleaning the ductwork by yourself. At times, it’s best to invest your money into a mold remediation team who knows what they are doing. After all, you may not have the proper supplies to get rid of mold altogether. Additionally, those who specialize in mold removal generally have more effective tools for the job and can conduct a targeted HVAC cleaning.

Preventing Mold

One of the best ways that you can prevent mold from spreading at the office is to install a HEPA filter. This helps maintain the cleanliness of your HVAC system for a long time to come. If you have had a mold problem in your Boston, MA, business before, then it’s never too late to think about prevention. You can also invest in a dehumidifier. This helps keep the moisture out of the air and cuts down on your time spent cleaning vents.

Getting rid of mold can be a pain. However, there are ways of preventing it and cleaning up after it happens. Generally, an HVAC cleaning is one of the best ways to trust that your air ducts aren’t compromised.

What You Need To Know About Puff Backs

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Having a modern, up-to-date furnace in your Boston, MA, home can make life a lot easier, but at the end of the day, you could still be dealing with some serious issues resulting from a variety of malfunctions. That’s because even the best furnaces are still prone to dirt and dust buildup, which often leads to small disasters known as puff backs. A puff back

• Involves a small explosion inside of your furnace or boiler
• Tends to occur more commonly in oil-fired heating systems
• Usually leads to widespread soot and smoke damage in a home

Generally, these issues are due to a malfunction in the furnace or heating system itself. Of course, the malfunction could be caused by a wide range of issues, such as a clogged filter or failing fan. Lack of maintenance appears to be the leading cause of issues leading up to puff backs of all types.

Varying Severity Levels

In some lucky cases, a puff back only causes minor damage to the furnace or heating system in question and is fairly quick and inexpensive to repair. However, other incidents, especially those from oil-fired systems, tend to be much larger and can spread soot, smoke and debris across all corners of a home in an instant. This not only leads to a potentially lengthy smoke cleaning process but can cause significant damage to the heating unit, requiring a full replacement in some cases.

Best Ways To Avoid Puff Backs

The best way to avoid this problem in your own home is to have your furnace, boiler or other heating system inspected annually by a certified professional. They have the knowhow needed to diagnose any issues and can give maintenance recommendations that reduce the likelihood of an explosion occurring. Otherwise, regularly changing your filters is a step in the right direction.

Understanding the basics of the average puff back can help you prepare your home against the threat, so you can enjoy your central heating in peace.

How To Manage Sewage Cleanup in Your Bathroom

1/18/2018 (Permalink)

Cleaning up areas of your home after flooding and sewer damage is awful no matter what, but cleaning up the bathroom can be especially tedious. If you ever face a sewage backup in your bathroom, there are a few things that are helpful to know to speed proper cleanup and ensure a safe and sanitary home in South Boston, MA.

1. Call for Help

If you suspect you have damaged sewer lines, call your sewage company to schedule an inspection. To protect your home from future mold or rot issues after a toilet overflow, call flood damage remediation experts. Only with the help of professional water removal specialists can you rest assured that floodwater has not crept into places you can’t see to wreak havoc.

2. Dry the Area

Though you may be tempted to sanitize your bathroom immediately after a toilet overflows, you should not do so before you start drying out the affected area. Whether you are dealing with a flooded toilet or an entire flooded basement, the first thing you should do is utilize heavy duty vacuums, drainage systems and fans to remove all the water.

3. Sanitize

After drying the area, sanitize it as best you can. Floodwater resulting from sewer damage can be toxic, so be thorough in your cleaning processes. Once the area is dry from the first round of sanitizer, you should plan to disinfect it one more time.

4. Dehumidify

The presence of excess water in a bathroom often welcomes lingering humidity, which only encourages mold growth in spaces affected by sewer water. During the process of drying, sanitizing and restoring, you should be sure that a dehumidifier is always running.

Cleaning up the aftermath of sewer damage doesn’t have to be a nightmare. By getting a head start on the problem and calling in the professionals, you can have your home clean and dry again in no time.

Understanding Your Flooded Toilet

1/18/2018 (Permalink)

It might seem like a simple issue, but a flooded toilet is a major problem for a lot of companies. That’s because it’s a sign of sewer damage, and when it includes any kind of backup, there’s a serious biohazard risk involved. To handle it properly, you need to work with a sewage company that can clean the area properly, containing any biological materials and preventing water damage in the process.

How Toilets Flood

Toilets are simple mechanical devices that rely on water pressure and gravity for the bulk of their operational energy. What does that mean for you? It means there are only a few reasons why they would flood, including the following:

• The flooded toilet has a clog in the bowl or trap, preventing water from cycling out.
• There’s a problem with running water that won’t stop, overwhelming the toilet’s ability to clear it in time.
• There’s a clog causing sewer damage further down the line, past the point where you can see its location.

Typically, if there’s running water but no clog, the toilet will automatically flush or run, and there won’t be a lot of risk for contamination. When there’s a clog in the line, though, the toilet might overflow if there are multiple flushes or a running water problem. The most serious issue is a clog in the drain line itself, which could lead to a backup. This is often the most difficult cleanup.

Calling in the Professionals

Whenever a flooded toilet backs up far enough to cause water damage, it’s also creating a contamination risk that needs to be cleaned properly. That’s why you should have a plan for calling in cleanup experts in Waterfront, MA whenever your company is dealing with any kind of sewer backup. It will keep your employees safe, minimize damage to your facilities, and ensure that cleanup causes to least disruption possible.

When you work with professionals in Waterfront, MA who have the certification to handle these issues, you can turn back sewer damage and improve your facilities. That’s the difference proper cleaning and repair makes.

Always be prepared before a hurricane strikes

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Boston - Downtown, Back Bay & South Boston, we want to make certain you and your family are prepared before the next storm strikes. We urge you to review the following preparedness tips to help safeguard your loved ones in the event of a hurricane:
Design a Family Plan Devise an evacuation plan with your family and chose a designated meeting place in case of separation. It is also worthwhile to conduct practice drills to make certain all family members are familiar with the plan. Create an Emergency Supply Kit This kit should include the following: first aid items, blankets, flashlights, cash, fresh water, nonperishable food items, candles, matches, necessary medication, a radio with batteries, personal hygiene products, baby formula and diapers (if needed), and all important documents should be placed in waterproof document storage bags. Prepare Your Home In anticipation of a hurricane, it is a good idea to prepare the outside of your home from damage caused by wind and debris. Boarding up windows and other glass portions of the home is a good way to prevent breakage.  It is important to know that taping windows does not prevent them from breaking. Also, remember to check around your home for hanging tree limbs and shrubs that need to be trimmed. Fill Your Gas Tank It is always a good idea to make sure your car's gas tank is full, just in case an emergency evacuation is ordered.  Often times, towns that are in an emergency situation can "shut down," leaving gas stations inoperable. During or after any storm, you can count on SERVPRO to be prepared no matter what the weather brings. Our highly trained staff and state-of-the-art equipment is ready 24/7 to help clean-up and restore damaged property, "Like it never even happened."®

Tips for Creating a Fire Escape Plan

A fire in Boston, MA usually happens without warning, so it is important that you are prepared and have a fire escape plan in place before you need it. Knowing how to create an emergency escape plan is the first step, because you want to ensure that the one that you design will be able to get you, your family and your pets out safely and quickly should a fire ever occur.

Fire Alarms

You should have fire alarms outside of all bedrooms and on all levels of the home. This ensures that everyone will be able to hear them sound if a fire happens. Every season, test them and change the batteries so that they are always fresh and working properly.

Prepare and Practice Your Escape Plan

Everyone should play a role in the creation of an escape plan so that they know it. Write it down and put it in an area where people can see it daily, such as on your refrigerator. When you are creating and practicing your plan, give each family member two escape routes. You also want to have a meeting spot for everyone to go to that is safely away from your home.

Once you have a good fire escape plan, it is important that the whole family knows what to do. This means occasionally practicing it, just like the fire drills you used to do when you were in school. According to the American Red Cross, only 26 percent of American families have created a plan and practiced it.

Now that you have this information, it is time to get your fire escape plan in place. Get the entire family together so that you can work on the plan together. It is also a good idea to practice your plan every now and then so that it remains fresh in everyone’s mind. Mold Damage After Flooding in your Business

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Damage After Flooding

Once flooding damage occurs in Boston, MA mold growth can begin within 24-48 hours of the event. Mold can grow in any environment with moisture and oxygen. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that travel airborne. Once the spores land, they begin digesting the new host surface. Until dampness has been eliminated, mold can continue to spread while it destroys the material on which it is living.

Without specialized cleanup, mold problems may continue to spread undetected. Consideration should be given to the following issues when remediating mold issues following flooding.

Moisture Control

While it is considered impossible to remove all mold from within a building, it can be reduced to levels by eliminating and controlling moisture and its sources. Removing standing water that may be home to mold colonies and bacteria becomes an important part of this process.

Indoor Humidity

It can be important to reduce indoor humidity to less than 45 percent inside a structure to prevent mold growth. Quickly moving dry air over the affected surface can help to speed the drying process. Air conditioners, industrial fans and de-humidifiers may be required depending on water levels.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

Cleaning methods may vary depending on the types of materials affected. Mold and mildew may be cleaned from some hard surfaces using water and detergent. Since mold can live in the empty spaces found in porous or absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles or carpeting, these items may need to be replaced after significant water exposure.

Quickly addressing any flooding problems in Boston, MA can be important to protect occupant and control future costs and risks from long-term exposure. Visit http://www.SERVPRObostondowntownbackbaysouthboston.com for more information on flood damage.

Home Restoration by Mitigating Storm Damage

Home Restoration by Mitigating Storm Damage

Hurricanes are known to cause damage by either water or wind. Wind damage occurs when the wind blows off winds, breaks windows, and compromises foundations. Flying debris driven by wind causes significant damage to structures and buildings. High winds can create waves at sea which wash over the land along the coastline, causing storm surges. On the other hand, water damage occurs with flooding from storm surge and heavy rainfall. Hurricane damage primarily occurs on islands and in coastal areas. Storms out at sea are sometimes not dangerous, except to shipping. Most hurricane damage happens when a hurricane hits the land. Coastal regions are highly at risk. The storm usually dies out fairly quickly once it is away from the ocean from which it takes its energy and moisture. The land also causes some friction that slows down the winds so that they become less damaging.

Floods are a significant natural hazard that affects humans. If flood water enters homes, immediate home restoration is essential. The seemingly simple process of river flooding inflicts substantial damage to lives and property with floods of unexpected extent, intensity, and duration. Damage from flooding depends on the complex interactions among landscape, climate, and human intervention. River flooding occurs because of overflowing of rivers during heavy downfall associated with storms, or when there is excess saturation of the ground. Wherever flooding occurs, extreme floods shake the people’s confidence in the engineering solutions installed to safeguard people from flood water, and in the government at large.

Ground water can increase during storms and result in flooding. A rise in the level of ground water causes over-saturation of the ground leading to rising in flood water. Also, river flooding may arise due to over-saturation. Flood pumps can reduce accumulation of water.

How Should You Handle Flooding of a Home or Business?

How Should You Handle Flooding of a Home or Business?

Flooding events can easily lead to lasting water damage. While most people would quickly free-associate the word flood with images of standing flood water that doesn't go down for weeks, the truth is that the majority of flood damage in the United States is due to much more quotidian causes. In fact, mundane sources of leaking like supply line breaks or pipe breaks account for far more water damage than any other source.

The good news is that this type of flooding is almost always subject to complete remediation and flood damage mitigation. The bad news is that many people simply do not act in time to save their flooded homes or businesses. The problem often arises when property owners incorrectly believe that the water in their business or water in their home either doesn't pose a serious threat or that they can somehow take care of it themselves. While the do-it-yourself attitude is an enduring and admirable characteristic of the American ethos, it has no place in the mitigation and restoration of flooded homes or businesses.

It is of the utmost importance that any time a property owner notices flood water in their home or water in their business that they immediately call in their local flood damage restoration company. A professional flood damage restoration company will be able to act quickly, minimizing the chances that water damage becomes permanent. In almost all cases, a professional restoration company that is called to the scene of a flooded home or business within 24 hours of the event will be able to complete a successful restoration and mitigation of the water damage. Waiting longer than 24 hours to begin restoration and mitigation efforts will begin to increase the likelihood of the flooded home or business sustaining lasting damage. Waiting longer than a week will all but ensure permanent damage and possible loss of the property.

Let's take a look at the water cleanup process that has been established over the last 50 years. We'll see what the typical restoration company carries out upon being called to the scene of a flooding event.

The call is made and the water cleanup team is dispatched

The first step in the restoration of any flood-damaged property is for the property owner to call in a professional water cleanup team. Upon arriving on scene, usually within the first 30 minutes of receiving the call, the water cleanup team will immediately enter the property. They will begin by assessing the severity and classification of the water in the business or water in the home. They will then make sure that the site of the original pipe break or supply line break is not actively spewing water. The cleanup team will also take special care to note if any water around the area of the supply line break or pipe break has seeped into structural components or is otherwise hiding out of site.

The large-scale removal of water beings

Next, the cleanup team will begin removing all standing water in the business or water in the home. This will be carried out through the use of high-powered vacuum equipment, which is capable of removing massive amounts of water at any given time. This part of the cleanup process will typically take less than one hour.

The team will begin the complete drying of the premises

The next step is to begin the drying process. Using industrial-strength drying equipment, the team will set up drying devices and dehumidifiers throughout the property. They will especially focus in on the area of the original pipe break or supply line break, taking care to make sure the area is completely dry and no structural or surface damage is permitted to spread. Upon completion of this step, the home will no longer risk incurring further damage and, after additional cleaning, it will be restored to its original state.

In cases of river flooding or damage by other types of standing water, after a flood pump is used, the water is evaluated for levels of bacteria and put into a category.

- Professional Drying - Professional, industrial grade dryers are used in water restoration service. After flood pumps have removed water, it's crucial to begin the drying process. Even when things look dry to the touch, they can still be wet. Specialty blowers are used to create airflow across previously flooded surfaces.

- De-humidification - A special complementary service to drying makes sure water is thoroughly removed from drywall and other building materials. Experts in storm restoration use specially designed meters to track the drying progress to be sure you get the most effective storm remediation.

- Cleanup and Sanitizing - After water is removed with a flood pump and other equipment, a critical part of your total home restoration is to have the area professionally cleaned and sanitized. River flooding and flooding due to hurricane damage or other storm damage features ground water and flood water that can be filled with bacteria or potentially dangerous organisms. Sanitizing after storm damage is an important part of storm remediation.

Winter Storms Create More Challenges

Winter storms like blizzards and whiteout situations can create ice damming, frozen pipes, hail damage, ice damage, wind damage and other problems making home restoration a challenge. There may be denting from hail damage, ice dam formation, frozen pipes, roof damage, severe ice damming, wind damage and damage from a roof leak requiring roof repair. These situations call for professional storm remediation. Frozen pipes require specialized treatment to thaw. Roof damage with a roof leak needs to be assessed so problem areas can be fixed correctly.

In an ice dam situation, shingles and gutters can be permanently damaged if it isn't corrected early. Ice damming left unchecked can lead to further flooding or roof leak scenarios leading to expensive roof repair situations. Wind damage, hail damage, ice dam events and ice damage can be incredibly destructive. Ice damage including an ice dam can lead to roof damage needing roof repair due to excessive weight. Professional home restoration is always the smart choice.

Trying to do it yourself can cause massive damage to your possessions because you simply don't have the industrial equipment on hand to quickly clean up the mess.

Compared to the additional damage that can come from "doing it yourself," the price of mitigation by a professional is going to save you a lot of money. Drying from a professional doesn't just come from a "dryer" but from air movers and blowers that will do so much more good than anything you could come up with in a do it yourself plan.

Beyond drying, mitigation includes removing the source of the problem that caused water in home and water in business in the first place. The source of the damage might be from flood damage, a supply line break, or a pipe break, or it could be a simple matter of a malfunctioning appliance that caused a flooded home. During mitigation, everything will be assessed, cleanup will begin quickly by an entire crew of experiences, and flood damage will be minimized. Drying especially needs to be done by professionals. If you leave it half done, the damage can be shockingly great.

Calling on a professional crew

Anyone who has flood damage from a flooded home, or a supply line break or pipe break, will thank themselves for calling on a restoration company for help. Do it yourself projects just don't work in when the damage is caused by water. Before looking up the first do it yourself video, call on a professional restoration expert beforehand. How To Tell If Mold Is Present

How To Tell If Mold Is Present

Nobody was ever quoted as saying they loved mold. Mold is gross. It's unsightly. That's if you can even see it to begin with. It usually is accompanied by a smelly odor. It's fungus. It's mildew. It's associated with uncleanliness. The unfortunate thing is mold damage happens to the best of us. Mold removal isn't easy but experts can provide a safe yet thorough approach.

Mold is a common occurrence when humidity, moisture and excessive water are present. Showers are prolific mold growth areas. Tubs might have black mold present after a few months of inhabiting a residence. This is especially true if residents don't provide proper ventilation. Opening a door after a shower and closing a curtain can be great techniques to prevent mold damage. Turning off the air condition can also prevent the spread of mold spores.

The mold growth occurred and a consumer is concerned. What's your next step? Do you consult a pro? Do you try "do it yourself" cleansing techniques on the internet? It's easy to think we can all be problem solvers. Mold is a bit more complicated than that. The fungus, mildew and smelly odor associated with mold are just a few of the symptoms you'll see. Those are the short term mold growth issues. The long term consequences can be way more hurtful on your home, business and wallet.

Mold damage can lead to further spread. Extended mold growth isn't good for various reasons. It dirties up things. It gets more fungus, mildew and smelly odor in your building. It provides more areas to potentially have to clean up. That's why it's invaluable to consult a professional who has experience dealing with every single type of mold and mold removal. The important thing is to stop the mold now and not later.

There are more types of mold than you can probably count. It's almost infinite. Many think black mold is the only type of mold. Black mold, which does surface often in tubs, is just one of the many many variations of mold. Experts know this. They know how to analyze the mold to specify what they are examining. They are aware of the issues mold in home or commercial mold damage clients face with each respective type.

That's why it's always beneficial to consult a restoration company for mold removal and mitigation. A restoration company does several things. Their first goal is to provide remediation. Remediation is the thorough removal of the mold. The remediation also includes sanitation and finding the source so that it doesn't occur again. Nobody wants to see black mold repeat every month or so in the same place.

What's worse is that mold growth could lead to a condition called dry rot. Dry rot happens when the mold infests the wood that supports the framework of your building. It's much worse than the eye sore of the fungus and mildew. It's much worse than that smelly odor. Dry rot actually decays the wood and could compromise the safe structure of your building. Dry rot could lead to a complete rebuild of a building if not halted in time. A restoration company can eradicate those issues by stopping the mold growth. Mold removal needs to be accomplished in a timely fashion.

They analyze the issue. They find the source. The remove the threat so it doesn't occur over and over again. Mold damage can happen for many reasons. Leaky pipes could be the issue. A worn out HVAC could also spell trouble. High humidity and excess water could always lead to mold. That problem needs to be fixed so that it never happens again.

The restoration company also provides mitigation of the loss. Mitigation is the lessening of the problem. Deodorization is one of those steps involved. The smelly odor isn't great. In fact, it can be terrible. It can prevent customers from ever inhabiting a business in a commercial mold damage event. Deodorization is simply the removal of the horrific smell associated with mold damage. Deodorization is an invaluable step with mold in home and commercial mold damage. Everyone wants an environment where they can breathe clean air and smell a clean aroma. Mitigation provides that whether it's mold in home or commercial mold damage.

Mold growth behind wall is another issue customers might suspect if they do smell foul aromas. Mold growth behind wall can be frustrating because it's nearly impossible to located the source of the smell. People may take out their trash. They may check under their house and building for dead animals. They won't be able to find that smell unless a true professional is consulted. Mold growth behind wall is unseen and unfriendly. The good news is a restoration company can provide mitigation and deodorization. They can locate the issue and fix the source with complete mold removal. That's why it's so beneficial for those wanting to get rid of the mold issue in a thorough manner to make the call. This way the mold growth behind wall is eradicated quickly before it leads to further damage.

Remediation by a restoration company can save mold in home or commercial mold damage customers much time and energy. The last thing you probably want to do is clean the same mold damage in the same spot every month for the next year.

Get Professional Help For Water Damage

Water damage restoration services are crucial if there is water in home or water in business. A homeowner or business owner who wants to save as much as possible and prevent further damage from a disaster-stricken property should seek professional service immediately.

Flooded home or water in business can come from a variety of sources including supply line break, flooding due to storms, pipe break, malfunctioning appliances, sewage backups, and even overflowing toilets or sinks.

Water can cause tremendous damage to a building and its contents. In fact, everything in the affected area is subject to being compromised within several days, and items like textiles and drywall can begin deteriorating within a short time. All it takes is a few inches of water in home or office due to pipe break, supply line break or other incident to cause water damage and create a serious threat to a residential or commercial property. Regardless of the reason for the flooded home or business, a quick response can prevent further damage of the property.

How Professionals Handle Flood Restoration

Water damage professionals from a restoration company arrive quickly to check for pipe break, supply line break or other reason for the water damage and restore the property. Water or flood damage restoration professionals are well-trained and knowledgeable in handling water in home and water in business situations. Reputable flood damage professionals perform water cleanup and drying in compliance with standards for flood damage or water mitigation.

Water in home or water in office must be removed quickly to protect the home or business, so mitigation professionals will respond as soon as possible to address the situation. The restoration company is fully equipped with powerful water extraction equipment, state-of-the-art drying system and moisture testing equipment.

The following are the steps followed by a restoration company or water cleanup professionals to clean up a flooded home or water in business.

The professionals will first have to inspect the flood damage and assess the extent of the problem and identify the source of water leak or other issues. Basements are often the hardest hit areas, although water or flood damage can affect anywhere, including behind walls, under floors, and penetrate any porous materials. Materials such as wood floors and walls are particularly vulnerable to damage because they contain gypsum, which contains numerous tiny cavities.

Removal of Standing Water

Professionals use industrial vacuums to ensure any standing water is properly extracted. These technicians have access to extremely powerful pumping equipment that is truck mounted, and this equipment is highly efficient in removing water from flooded homes and commercial establishments.

Cleaning And Deodorizing

After removing standing water, mitigation professionals will remove soaked debris, and clean it up before drying begins. The professionals decide what to dispose of and what materials or items that they believe can be salvaged. Anything that can be saved will be cleaned and set aside for disinfecting. In most cases, though, a lot of items are disposed of, including paper products, composite wood products and some textiles.

Drying of Structure And Contents

The bulk of water damage mitigation focus on the drying process. The technique involves the use of hot air injectors, powerful humidifiers, commercial air movers, and other high-tech equipment. If there is water trapped below wood floors, or behind walls, special equipment may be used to extract it. Once the drying is completed, water cleanup professionals will disassemble the work area, conduct a thorough assessment and clean up, and restore the affected area to its original state.

Water or flood damage can occur due to a supply line break, drain clogs or pipe break, or during heavy floods. As long as a property owner contacts a restoration company right away, water cleanup technicians will be able to minimize the extent of the damage. They can also reverse any damage rather quickly, allowing a family to get their lives back on track before long. Steps to Take if You Suspect Mold Damage is Present

7/26/2017 (Permalink)

Steps to Take if You Suspect Mold Damage is Present

What are the signs of mold in the home or commercial mold damage?

Mold damage occurs all the time even when there’s not a flood. While flood damage causes mold quickly, it can occur without a flood. If there are flood waters in a home or office, it’s best to get the water out quickly and efficiently to begin the drying process. The less time water and moisture have in a building, the less likely mold is to grow. It takes less than three days for mold to grow, though.

To combat mold that comes from a leak or something less devastating than a flood, it’s helpful for people to know what to look for. A smelly odor is a big sign, and it’s one of the most important signs. At first glance, a smelly odor is something people use deodorization to get rid of. Deodorization is a safe way to make things smell better. A good example of deodorization might a wall plug-in, a candle, or even air freshener.

A smelly odor tends to occur when mold growth behind walls is present. Mold growth behind walls occurs usually where there is a leak no one noticed due to lack of visibility. Mold growth behind walls is particularly dangerous because it has ample time to spread and grow before people realize it’s there. If deodorization isn’t getting rid of a smelly odor, it’s time to call for mold removal.

Mildew, fungus, and dry rot are other signs of mold damage. Mold is fungus, but sometimes people notice it in the form of mildew. It might not seem like a big deal, but mildew grows in the same conditions as old. If people see mildew, they’ll probably see mold. Dry rot works the same way. No one gets dry rot at home or work without ample moisture issues, and dry rot is a big sign.

When mold is left alone and ignored, it becomes toxic to a large number of people. It’s not just black mold that’s toxic, either. Black mold is considered toxic mold, but any mold has the chance to become toxic when it grows enough and is present long enough.
What should I do about commercial mold damage or mold in the home.

Mold damage is not something to ignore. No matter how small it is, do not ignore mold damage. Mold in the home and commercial mold damage are both devastating, and they must be professionally handled. A restoration company is the company to call when mold removal services are needed. Professional mold removal is handled by a restoration company with experience handling remediation and mitigation.

Once a restoration company has been contacted and remediation and mitigation are underway, it’s time to know what’s helpful and what’s not. The remediation process is specific, and it’s helpful to let mold removal happen by the professionals. DIY mold removal, mitigation, and remediation are dangerous. Disturbing a fungus such as mold only makes things worse. Mold spores are easily disturbed, which sends them back into the air to be redistributed throughout the house.

The best thing home and business owners can do is simply allow the remediation and mitigation process to take effect. They can turn off the HVAC system to slow the spread of mold spores in the house or office. They can also leave mold alone. It’s simply not safe to attempt to clean up mildew, fungus, or mold growth without the help of professionals at a restoration company.

Black mold, a lot of mold, mold growth behind walls, or any other mold growth at home or work is worth a call to a restoration company. It's always more cost-effective, safer, and better for the health of everyone involved to call professionals right away. Never use DIY methods to rid a home or office of mold.

Guidelines for Successful Mold Removal and Remediation

6/26/2017 (Permalink)

Guidelines for Successful Mold Removal and Remediation

Mold is a silent culprit that invades homes and businesses that experience excessive moisture due to floods, leaky water pipes, or even undetected plumbing problems. It can be found on almost any surface where moisture is present. Sometimes it grows undetected for long periods on wood, drywall, paper, insulation, and deep inside carpets and padding underneath. When excessive moisture is undiscovered and uncontrolled, the result is growth of mold in a home or in a business. Mold only needs a good supply of moisture and oxygen to flourish. Even though it may be impossible to eliminate all mold completely indoors, it can be successfully controlled by controlling moisture. If persistent infestation exists, it may be necessary to seek the services of a reputable mold remediation specialist. These professionals understand the process of proper mold mitigation and mold removal. They investigate the extent of the mold damage and determine the primary cause.

When to Hire a Professional

Once mold is discovered in a home or business, it is time to seek professional assistance. The is a serious problem that cannot be ignored or delayed. It will only get worse if left untreated. The first step is to arrange for a professional mold inspection by a reputable, certified remediation specialist. Most remediation companies do not do their own inspections, but work with third party inspectors. It is the inspector's job to find the root of the problem and determine the extent of the damage. A qualified inspector should be certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene or the American Council for Accredited Certification and provide a written, customized report with lab results of samples. It is at this point that a mold remediation company should begin the clean-up process and mold mitigation. The cleanup begins with the removal of all mold, mildew, and fungus infested materials.

Insurance Coverage Limitations

If the mold damage or mildew and fungus infestation is a direct result of some emergency that is covered by a homeowner's insurance policy, the insurance may be required to pay. An example of this might be a broken drainpipe or water heater problem. The insurance company will investigate to determine the direct cause of the mold to determine if it is covered by a regular homeowner's policy. Mold resulting from floodwater is only covered if a separate flood policy was written. Most expenses incurred for mold damage and mold removal are not covered by insurance.

Types of Mold

The most common types of mold in a home or business. are fungus and mildew. A more severe type is black mold. All types of mold can grow behind walls be invisible, but can cause a smelly odor that requires deodorization techniques to eliminate. Once a smelly odor is detected in an area, mold damage may already have occurred. The first indication that mildew or fungus exists is the smelly odor that is present with commercial mold damage and mold in the home as well. This requires an extensive deodorization process.

Professional Mold Removal and Mitigation

To prevent further commercial mold damage and home damage from mold, professionals employ extensive mitigation techniques to eliminate the moisture source as they go about the process of mold removal. As with any mold infestation, smelly odors present a major challenge even for professionals. Commercial mold damage and damage caused by mold in the home require prompt action to prevent lingering smells that require specific deodorization techniques. Some professionals use a thermal fogging system that works by combining a deodorizer with a fresh scent in the process of deodorization. When there is extensive commercial mold damage, experts recommend opening windows, running ceiling fans, and operating exhaust fans to help disperse bad smells that were created by the mold.

After the Flood - Then What?

Nobody expected that the creek could rise that far. It never had before. Now, the house is a muddy mess of debris, water and extensive damage. For some people, moving would be the first thought that came to mind. However, others want to stay in their homes, repair the water damage, and live on in the house they love.

Flood damage is more than just the standing water left after the creek recedes. It's ruined carpets and furniture, wet plaster and more. Water in the home or business is just the start of the problems. Without proper clean-up and sanitizing, mold can grow, floor damage can be permanent and drywall can be ruined. It is imperative to immediately start the restoration process to help limit the damage and mounting costs. A call to a professional water mitigation company should be the first step taken by a home owner after flooding occurs.

Water cleanup begins with bringing in equipment to extract the water in the home. Pumps and specialized vacuums are used to suck up the water. Restoration is a process. Once the puddles have been cleared, the next step will begin. The water damage will be in the walls, floors and furnishings. Drying is imperative to help stop the damage and to prevent mold from growing.

Fans, dehumidifiers and other equipment will be brought in to help dry out the water in walls and moisture from furnishings and floors. Thoroughly drying water in the home will save thousands of dollars worth of damage later.

Restoration from the devastation of flood damage is not an easy process. A professional service should be called to handle the process so that it is done correctly. For instance, not many individuals would know that after the water in their business is removed or the water in their home is dried, more steps are still necessary. Sanitizing the surfaces, furnishings and anything else the water touched should be done.

Water in the business or home could have left a foul odor. Professionals can remove the lingering odors left even after the water cleanup. Mitigation professionals know how to use fogging equipment and industrial air scrubbers to help remove the last traces of the water damage.

After the restoration process of water cleanup, drying, sanitizing and odor elimination, there is still one last step in the water damage mitigation process - repairs. Water in a business can damage walls, carpeting and flooring. Drywall may need to be replaced. Electrical outlets and wiring should be checked for damage. Water in a business may have warped sub-flooring, damaged floor joists and wrecked major appliances. Time is money, so flood damage needs to be taken care of as quickly as possible. Quick yet thorough mitigation will get a business back up and running after flood damage has occurred.

Storms, floods and even appliance malfunctions like a dishwasher overflow can cause homes and businesses the headaches of having to deal with the water cleanup process. Nobody wants to go through it, but when it happens a person shouldn't go through it alone. Professionals who know how to deal with the devastation left behind are the best option for a quick, safe restoration. Since professional water damage restoration companies have the equipment and training to handle cleaning, drying and even rebuilding homes and businesses, they should be the first choice for mitigation.

Sure, the damage is devastating and overwhelming. Of course, nobody wants to go through flooding and the after-effects. The reality is that these occurrences can and do happen every day. The good news is that there are people specifically trained to restore homes and businesses to their pre-flood conditions.

These companies also work with your insurance company to get a claim started so that the home or business can get back to its preloss condition as quickly as possible.

Air Quality is a Huge Factor to Consider

Many people do not realize that a smoke smell is very difficult to get rid of because it can hide and tricky places between walls, behind cabinets, in wood, and many other unnoticeable places. A smoke smell can linger on for years and it takes special solutions and odor removal machines to totally eliminate the smell. Just like soot damage, smoke odor removal is something that you just cannot wash away with soap and water. It has to be removed from all surfaces to include furniture, clothes, curtains, and many other hard-to-reach places.

Whether it is a fire in home or fire in business, smoke damage must be taken seriously because it affects the overall air quality. If left untreated, it can trigger serious health problems because smoke damage also leaves behind toxic chemicals which deteriorate the air quality. This is another reason why a fire damage restoration company is so important.

Take Better Care of Belongings

When there is a fire in home or fire in business, everyone’s belongings will absorb some type of smoke damage or soot damage. A normal washing machine will not be able to get rid of damage done to clothing. Items left in cabinets or cupboards will also have to be washed. In addition, furniture will have to be cleaned as well as electronics and other items.

People who try to clean these items up themselves often end up throwing them away because it is quite difficult. This can be quite expensive especially with commercial fire damage where very expensive items may be affected. In terms of savings, a fire damage restoration company allows you to save money because they have the right machinery and tools to clean and restore personal and business items.

Call the Pros

Whether it is home or commercial fire damage, the most important step is to have peace of mind and this can be achieved a lot more easily and quickly when you let professionals handle a fire cleanup. In terms of cost and health safety, it is always a wiser choice to call the professionals. Visit http://www.SERVPRObostondowntownbackbaysouthboston.com for more information on fire damage.

How To Get Mold Off Of Your Walls

If you find mold damage in the walls of your business or home, you can usually get rid of it easily. Business owners and homeowners who have non-porous walls can wipe away the fungus and mildew with a damp cloth. But if you do have porous walls, you will not only need to cut away the walls. You will also need to call in the mold removal experts that can deal with mold in home and commercial mold damage. This needs to happen because fungus and mildew will grow inside the material of the walls.

Mold and Drywall

As a material, drywall is high in cellulose. Because of this, drywall is one of the most common areas that mold damage will appear in the home. You can't easily get rid of mold on drywall, so you will have to hire the services of a mold remediation company that will do mitigation and deodorization that will rid your home or business of the smelly odor. You will also have to cut out and dispose of the drywall that has mold growing on it. A mold removal expert will make sure that the mold in home or commercial mold damage doesn't spread beyond the drywall.

Mold Damage That Grows Behind Walls

Most fungus and mildew will grow in the wall cavities of your home or business. The wall cavities have warm and moist pockets of humidity that allows mold to proliferate. Mold can also hide behind wallpaper. That's because the glue can hold detritus that turns into food for mold.

If you need to find mold behind your walls, you will need to hire the services of a local mold remediation company that will do mitigation and deodorization services that will rid your home or office of the smelly odor that can come with mold.

Signs That You Have Mold On Your Walls

Some signs that you have mold damage on your walls include bulging, discoloration, and peeling or cracked paint. If you see any of these things on a wall in your home or business, examine it closely for signs of fungus and mildew.

These signs could also be an indication that mold is growing in the wall cavity. If you see small spots of mold on your wall, this could indicate that a much larger mold colony is growing behind your wall. A smelly odor is another sign that mold could be growing behind a wall in your home or business.

If you see or smell any of these signs, immediately call a mold removal company for remediation services for mold in home and commercial mold damage. When you call in the mold mitigation experts, they will perform remediation and deodorization services that will get rid of the mold in home and commercial mold damage.

Why Does Mold Grow On The Walls?

The three main causes of mold growth on the walls of homes and businesses are condensation, high humidity, and leaks. When water vapor combines with cooler surfaces and turns into liquid form, that's when condensation forms. You'll usually find condensation on the walls of your home's perimeter. Because of the cool air outdoors, these walls are usually colder than the others.

Drying clothes inside of your home or hot steam can both do their parts to increase the humidity in your home. If the humidity levels in your home or business stay high for a long period of time, mold may start to grow on the walls. You can always decrease the humidity of your home or business by opening doors and windows.

Leaky pipes in the walls of your home or business are another way you can get mold in that area. If the leaky pipe is in your wall cavity, then it's rare that mold will be discovered before it's set into its environment.

Under these circumstances, you should always call a mold removal company for mitigation and deodorization services that can also get rid of the smelly odor of the mold. Visit http://www.SERVPRObostondowntownbackbaysouthboston.com for more information on mold removal.

Things that the Water Damage Restoration Company will Do to Restore Your Property

Things that the Water Damage Restoration Company will Do to Restore Your Property

Water damage can happen in a business or at home for various reasons. These include a leaky roof, burst pipes, floods, or even after fighting a fire. Regardless of the cause of the water in home or business, you need to take quick action to contain the water damage and do the proper water cleanup if you are to save your valuables. The best thing would be employing the services of a professional water damage restoration company to do the drying, water cleanup, and restoration of the building.

Professional companies that carry out water damage restoration aim to reinstate the building back to its former glory and mitigate the damage. These experts will determine the extent of the damage that the water in business or home building has caused on a scale of one to four to identify the best technique to use when drying the premises as well as come up with suitable mitigation strategies.

Level one implies that there was light water damage to one room or sections but the carpets or rugs weren’t soaked by the water. Level two water damage involves at least one complete room that has a soaked carpet and wicking up the wall twelve to twenty-four inches. The third level generally entails overhead damages such as leaky ceiling and a saturated room. The fourth level is the highest flood damage characterized by deep saturation and is commonly caused by a flood.

After categorizing the water damage, the professionals will determine the water in home or business contamination level to determine the mitigation technique that will be the best fit for the situation. The higher the level, the more contaminated the water is. For instance, black water damage is the most unsanitary as it involves blocked plumbing, sewage backflow and standing water. Such levels of water contamination can cause illness or demise if ingested and proper water cleanup should be done to prevent such outcomes.

The team of water restoration professionals will then remove the water in business premises or at home based on the assessment done above. The mitigation procedure involves pumping standing water in business building or at home and suck that water out of the carpet and the floor to prevent further flood damage. They will then remove any dry wall which has wicking. The experts will take out and replace damaged insulation and structural beams during the water damage mitigation process. The floor may be removed so as to dry it or be replaced depending on the level of water contamination. Air movements cause the carpet and surfaces to dry faster.

Once the water damage restoration experts are done drying, deodorizing, and sanitizing the area where the water in the home had caused damage, they will leave some of their gear in place for a couple of days. This is done to continue drying the place and to return the temperature and moisture levels to normal. Air movements will also hasten the drying process. The water damage restoration experts have the best equipment for air movement and will therefore take care of the issue in the best manner. Reassessment of the home or business building will be done after three days, and if the property has reached pre-water damage dryness, the pros will remove their equipment and your home or business premises will be restored.

Contacting water damage restoration professionals as soon as your home or business is soaked in water will cut the water cleanup expenses. Trying to do the job by yourself since you do not have the necessary knowledge or equipment such as the air movement machines will result in flood damage and other severe consequences due to the water in business premises or at home. The experts know how to mitigate water damage. The sooner the water in home or business is dried, the lesser the water or flood damage will be.

What Can Someone Do When They Experience a Fire Loss?

What Can Someone Do When They Experience a Fire Loss?

Getting life back to normal when someone’s home or business has been affected by fire damage is extremely stressful. An individual may experience emotional as well as financial hardship. Loss of valuables and family keepsakes may leave a person feeling helpless. Fire in their home or a fire in their business is a terrible site for an owner to encounter.

The property owner experiencing the fire loss may find it necessary to seek help from a professional fire cleanup company. The owner may not be able to enter the property when faced with a fire in their home or a fire in their business. The strong odors from smoke damage can be harmful to their health.

What Types of Damages Can a Fire in a Home or a Fire in a Business Cause?

Coming up against a fire in the home may become an extremely difficult situation. Types of damages an owner can expect include soot damage, smoke damage, and the air quality in the home is affected. Overall a fire loss can be an upsetting -as well as costly- experience.

Soot damage on rugs, upholstery, and curtains may be more costly to clean. In some cases, it may be easier to replace these items. Air quality may not improve until fire cleanup begins, and odors from smoke damage are removed. Fire damage to a home or business can seem like a nightmare.

Known Dangers of Commercial Fire Damage

All fires to any structure can be dangerous. A fire in a business can spread quickly to nearby areas. Commercial fire damage may involve dangerous gasses leaking and even explosives depending on the type of business in place. If not handled quickly a commercial fire damage can result in a long-term loss. Certain substances, like combustible metals often in industrial locations can emit undesirable chemicals making the air quality problematic.

Dealing with the aftermath of a fire in the business property can also put a dent on the finances for an owner. Especially when they solely rely on income produced from their business.

Not only can a commercial fire damage result in the destruction of items they have invested on, but also dealing with the repairs can be extremely costly. Heavy soot damage on clothing in retail shops, for instance, cannot be sold and is a complete loss to the owners.

Certain types of commercial fire damage may be compensated by an insurance company to help owners recover from a fire loss, however, it will likely not happen as quickly as they would like. The same can be said for homeowners that need to recover from the effects of a fire in their home. Beginning the fire cleanup process is imperative to prevent further destruction from fire damage.

What Does a Fire Cleanup Professional Do?

Fire cleanup professionals provide a variety of services to those that have experienced a fire loss. They have the equipment to clean areas affected by soot damage, and machines that improve air quality by eliminating pervasive odors due to smoke damage. Fire damage can go beyond what a home or business owner may see.

Visual inspection can show the soot damage around the structure, and the odors from smoke damage will affect the air quality, and the odors can linger on. An important step taken by a fire damage restoration company is to inspect behind walls and under flooring for additional fire damage. Working with a trusted company can help owners get their life back in order. Visit http://www.SERVPRObostondowntownbackbaysouthboston.com for more information on fire damage.

Mold Removal and The Implications as Far as Remediation

Mold Removal and The Implications as Far as Remediation

Mold is a very difficult agent to cope with when it becomes pervasive enough to affect people. It is an interesting living organism that usually grows out of sight, and so people don't think about it very much unless it directly affects them.

This microbial growth can look like mildew or fungus which are not particularly harmful, but mold is an entirely different story. It is very hazardous to humans because it gives off spores that when breathed in can take up residence inside of us and grow.

Mold can grow in the midst of fungus and mildew, masking its presence, so when a mold cleanup and mitigation procedure is undertaken, the mildew and fungus are usually cleaned up too so as not to miss any of the moldy areas that might be hiding.

Mold does put out millions of spores as this microbial growth grows and matures. These spores float through the air until they land on an area that is conducive to its growth and then it plants itself and grows. It needs a dark area, no moving air, and a source of moisture to grow. If any one of those three items is missing, it cannot grow at all.

If a homeowner or business owner discovers any mold that is growing, they would be well advised not to attempt to clear it up by themselves, as they can endanger themselves, and probably will not be successful in getting rid of it. Many people will attempt to wipe the microbial growth away with a cloth, but all they accomplish is to wipe off the top and leave the roots. The roots penetrate into just about all surfaces except glass, and unless they are destroyed, the substance will just regrow.

A mold cleanup and mitigation process must begin as soon as possible after it the microbial growth discovered, and an environmental hygienist should be involved due to the expertise of such an individual. The environmental hygienist will be able to tell the difference between the moldy areas and the mildew and fungus, and then prescribe the proper treatment for the mold cleanup operation and the mitigation procedures.

The environmental hygienist and the cleanup workers will wear protective clothing, gloves, and masks to protect themselves and they may cordon off various sections of a building to do the cleaning and removal of any items that are contaminated. Entire rooms, carpeting, walls, flooring or ceilings might have to be replaced in the process, depending on what is contaminated.

The mold cleanup and mitigation procedures are very carefully planned out by the environmental hygienist so that everything will go smoothly with no chance of error or contamination beyond the affected area. Once the offending substance is removed, and the area is sanitized, life can get back to normal for the occupants of the home or business. Spring Into a Beautiful Yard All Season Long

4/7/2017 (Permalink)

The calendar officially says Spring, which means people will soon begin prepping their yard for seasonal entertaining. This month is the perfect time to assess and repair any damage your lawn and garden may have incurred as a result of extreme winter weather.

If you protect your trees or shrubs with burlap wraps during the colder temperatures now is the time to unwrap them. You should also trim any dead or decayed branches to allow for new, healthy growth.  To clean-up overcrowded flower beds, prune spent perennials, rake fallen leaves and dead foliage, and be sure to pull-up any remaining annuals from the previous year. This will help to give you a fresh start for new Spring planting.  Once clean-up is complete, spread a pelleted fertilizer to existing plants on the soil’s surface to ensure that Spring rain efficiently carries it to the roots.

After you have tidied your flower beds, it is a good idea to address damaged areas of your lawn in advance of Spring seeding. First, remove soil damaged by plows, salt or winter burn.  Once the area is clean, add the first dose of fertilizer and crabgrass treatment. To help keep the new seed moist and healthy, work a ½ inch layer of compost into the soil.

Now that your gardens and lawn are ready for outdoor fun, move on to other areas of your property. Inspect your driveway, walkways and patios for loose gravel or cracks and repair any damage. Use a pressure washer to remove algae and dead foliage from pavers and the exterior of your home. It is also a good idea to remove rotted or damaged wood from fences and replace with new, freshly painted pickets.

At SERVPRO of Boston, we are committed to helping you keep your home clean and safe. While inspecting your property, if you notice water damage as a result of winter weather or if Spring showers seep into your home, call SERVPRO of Boston immediately. Our experienced team of professionals have the knowledge to mitigate water damage and safeguard your family all season long.

Handling a Water Loss in Boston, MA

3/30/2017 (Permalink)

Handling a Water Loss in Boston, MA
Boston, MA is one of the most historically significant
cities in the US. It is full of many tight-knit communities. However,
living in such a place could be quite stressful if you have water damage
or flood damage. Some of the houses in Boston, MA are quite old and so
is the piping. The result is that they could leak water in home or water
in business. Also, the city experiences its fair share of
flooding in areas such as Back Bay. Thus, it is important for you to
know the mitigation measures you can take in case of water damage or
flood damage.

Immediate Steps to Take

The first step to take is to remove any water immediately, for instance,
any stagnant pools of water should be removed with a wet-vac cleaner.
You can also use a mop for a basic water cleanup exercise.

The other step immediately after some flooding is to ensure that there
is adequate air movement. Some rooms are prone to invasion by mold, some
of which could make a building inhabitable. Additionally, you should
take mitigation measures to prevent any further damage. All items within
a flooded room should be moved to a dry place where drying can begin to
take place. You should be careful about leaving the items in an open
area where they may be prone to theft.

Sometimes, handling the water can be quite difficult. In such an
instance, you may need to hire the professional services of a water
cleanup company. Such a company has special equipment such as water
pumps and professional extractors that they use to rid the building of water in Back Bay,

Think About Safety

In the case of water in home or water in business, you should think of
safety first. If you choose to do the restoration work yourself, ensure
that you have the right safety gear. For instance, you must wear
protective gloves. They will ensure that you do not injure your hands as
you move items around. Besides that, you should wear the right
footwear. If a room is flooded, you may not be able to see what is just
below the surface. Never wade through a flooded room barefoot as you
could puncture your feet.

Use Disinfectant

If your building in Downtown Masschusetts is flooded, you will have to
use disinfectant to clean the house. The reason for this is that the
dump conditions created by flooding create the perfect conditions for
bacteria to breed. You should use a high-quality disinfectant to ensure
that your family remains safe.

While most people still prefer to use bleach, there are products that
are more effective and much safer than bleach. If you are worried about the
environment, there are numerous products that you can use which are

Ensure Adequate Air Movement

Another factor that can cause bacteria to grow in the home is the lack
of efficient movement of air. If the microbial growth in the home gets
out of control, it can adversely affect the restoration cost. Efficient
movement of air ensures that the drying process takes place efficiently.

You should consider getting a dehumidifier and a box fan. While these
products cannot compete with the products that professionals use Downtown, they help. Place numerous fans in the area affected by the
floods. It will help to get the water molecules in the air. The
dehumidifier will then help to get rid of the moisture from the air.
When the professionals come in for the final drying process, you will have done everything possible to prevent secondary damages to your home.

Consider Demolition

The cost of reconstruction can be quite high. However, leaving
everything intact after the building has been damaged by water can be
dangerous. It can expose your family members to mortal danger. At times,
the floodwater could also combine with sewer water, making everything
that was touched contaminated. In such a case, it would make sense to
remove and replace any damaged wall.

For instance, the affected drywall and baseboard should be removed and
taken to a landfill. After water damage, you may need
to get rid of the tiles to access any water that may have
gotten under them after your home is damaged by water. Leaving them in
place could provide an optimal breeding ground for bacteria and microbial growth.

Choosing the Restoration Company

Choosing a professional company can help to mitigate the damage.
However, there are many companies offering the service. Thus, it can be
challenging to figure out which one to choose. Some factors can help get
 the right company.

•    Choose a company that is insured and is licensed. A professional
company will ensure that its technicians have the proper certification
from professional organizations.

•    Ask your neighbors and friends about the companies they have used.
Word of mouth is still one of the most important ways of finding a good
restoration service. If your friends have had satisfaction with a
certain company, there is good chance they are good quality. You should
ask neighbors and friends whose houses may have been affected by similar situations before.

•    Look for a company that has fast response time. The damaging
effects of flooding can get worse even with an hour of delay. Look for a
company that has a record for responding to its clients’ needs in the
least amount of time.

•    Ensure the restoration contract outlines what exactly the company
will do. The company should clearly outline everything the company will
do and the price each item will cost. If that is the case, you need
to know how much the work may cost you. Sometimes, the costs could be so
high that you may want to get quotes from another company.

•    The company you choose should have experience in dealing with
insurance companies. Ultimately, your insurer may pay for the
restoration work, depending on your policy. However, if you do not make you choice carefully,
costs could end up coming out of pocket. You should choose a company
that knows how to expedite the process of getting the insurance claim.

While there are many considerations to keep in mind when restoring your
damaged home, these should prove quite useful. Finally, keep in mind
that quality should always take priority over price when choosing a
company to do the restoration work. Visit http://www.SERVPRObostondowntownbackbaysouthboston.com for more information on water damage restoration.

What To Do: Fire Loss in a Major City
Having a major fire in one's home is one of peoples'
greatest fears. It is a truly terrifying prospect; not only is there
smoke inhalation to consider, but the burns of the flames themselves and
the trauma and loss of dear valuables in the engulfment. In the event
of a fire, it is obviously paramount to get you and your loved ones to
safety. But after the event, there is not much talked about. We hear
about what to do during a fire, but may not know the exact ways to
recover should we escape the horrors.

If you live in Boston MA or the Back Bay area, there is hope for you
and a way to fully resume normal activities and have a restored home.
SERVPRO is there for you to help recover what is lost. Fire loss can be
devastating, but here are some tips that can help guide you after such
an unfortunate event.

For one, it is important to survey the damage. Likely, there will be
fire damage, water damage from fire and the fire department's attempts
to stop the flames, smoke damage and soot damage. Not only that, but
consider the subpar air quality that is left behind after such a

Here is some advice should you be waiting for help to arrive or are
surveying what needs to be done. For one, you must limit movement in the
home so that the soot particles don't get embedded in your upholstery.
This is important in order to save valuable items like chairs and carpets. Next,
you should tape double layers of cheese cloth over the air registers;
this allows the home to restore its air quality by not allowing air
ducts to further spread soot particles. Change the HVAC filter, and wash
both sides of the leaves of houseplants with water; this allows them to
"breathe" normally again. Keep your hands clean to avoid soiling
anything else made of cloth in the home, and empty the freezer and
refrigerator so that spoiled food will not cause further problems, should the electricity be

What do you NOT do in the event of fire loss? Do not attempt to shampoo
or wash carpets or upholstery without first contacting SERVPRO. Most
definitely, do not attempt to clean any electricals if they have been
near fire or water. Do not eat any canned or packaged products that have
been near fire. And, importantly, do not send your clothes to a dry
cleaner, as the smoke smell can "set" in your clothes. Further advice
will be given by a SERVPRO professional regarding what you need to

How does fire restoration work? In Boston, Massachusetts or the Back Bay
of MA, the first step is obviously calling a service like SERVPRO,
which is staffed 24 hours a day. The next day or sooner, a professional
will come to your home and assess the fire damage and begin the fire
cleanup process. Assessing the damage allows them to formulate a cleanup
and restoration plan that is catered to the specific, unique damage you
have experienced. To protect against further damage, the SERVPRO
professionals will board up windows and tarp over roofs to make sure
there is no theft or problems regarding weather conditions. In Boston or
the Back Bay of Massachusetts, there can be incidents of snow entering
homes, so that should be accounted for.

If water damage is present, this will be the next step of the fire
restoration process. SERVPRO will institute water removal and drying of
surfaces should there have been water damage from fire. Next step after
that is assessing soot damage and smoke damage. SERVPRO uses special
equipment to remove evidence of both soot and smoke from the home. The
last and final step is cleaning and sanitizing the items in your home
that have been damaged. They also are able to remove odors through
specialized equipment and processes.

These steps, however, are only the first parts of the process. The major
project is restoring your home to its pre-fire condition, which sometimes requires major repairs and the help of a contractor. It could involve
minor reconstruction like repairing carpets, or something bigger, like
reconstructing parts of your home. At any rate, a service like SERVPRO
has you covered for repairs and will make sure your home never shows the
 aftereffects of a fire.

Fire cleanup, as you can see, is a multi-layered and complex process.
SERVPRO will make sure you are back to normal as soon as possible, and
they work quickly to have you comfortably back in your home. However, one must be aware that this kind of damage can
take several weeks to repair.

We hope these tips will help you understand how to further protect your
property from damage should there be a fire. We hope, also, that these
tips will help you understand the process by which these issues are
resolved by fire restoration companies. Never forget that their phone
lines are open, any hour of the day, to help you move forward and figure
out the next steps to take. The process begins with a phone call to
restore your home. It
is in an event such as a fire that we discover what is most important in
life. There may have been fire damage, sometimes extensive, but you
still have your life, your family members, and that which can never be
destroyed which are beyond material possessions. Remember: please be
safe, and protect yourself.

What To Do When Mold Is Found In A Boston Home

3/30/2017 (Permalink)

What To Do When Mold Is Found In A Boston Home
A Mold or microbial growth, such as mildew or fungus, may be
present in a home in Boston and hiding where the homeowner cannot
see.  Back Bay, MA homeowners must ensure they have taken steps to keep
the house clean, and this article explains how the community may call a
mitigation company for help, so they may begin mold cleanup as soon as
possible.  Each step that is taken to keep the home clean will account
for Massachusetts weather, and it will allow for someone to ensure they
are as comfortable as possible.

#1:  What Does The Environmental Hygienist Do?

There are quite a few people who need an environmental hygienist, but
they do not know what the professional does when they arrive at the
home.  Someone who has asked for help from an environmental hygienist
will note they get a full inspection, industrial gear is used to clean
the house and an honest assessment of the situation is offered.  After inspection, Industrial Hygienist will write a protocol to determine exactly how the house must be cleaned to remove any dangerous microbial growth. The
company will ensure they have the appropriate crew on the scene that is capable
of cleaning the house quickly, and they will offer a number of services
to the homeowner that are helpful.  They will show the homeowner where
the house has been affected by mold or mildew, and they will explain the
nature of each growth or fungus.  Mold cleanup takes some time, and it
may begin just after the inspection.

#2:  How Long Does The Process Last?

The process of cleanup will last more than a day in many cases, and the
hygienist's report determines how much must be done for their work to
be complete.  They will be honest with the homeowner, and they will take
their time to ensure the house is safe once again.  Anyone who orders
service in Back Bay or Boston, MA must ensure they have accounted for
the time needed for cleaning, according to the hygienist's report , and they will notice it is quite simple to
account for the days that it takes when there is no other choice.

#3:  Testing Air Quality

Air in the home is retested to ensure it is improving on every cleaning.
The company may do quite a lot of work that will take out every spore,
and they cannot know they have been successful until the air in the house has been retested. Often times, the air in the house will be fair easier to
breathe because it does not have mold spores present, and the air
quality test will show any spores that are still in the air.  It may be
possible for the homeowner to see the results of each test, and they
will know if things are improving as they should.  The evidence that is
given to the homeowner will help them feel more comfortable with the
work they have ordered, and they will see a change happening in the
house that is not always visibly apparent.

#4:  Order Service At Once

Homeowners must order service from a hygienist in Massachusetts as soon
as possible because they cannot allow a microbial growth to sit in their
home for such a long time.  They could begin to experience health
troubles that are related to their home's poor state, and professional help to determine the next step is how to proceed.  In extensive cases, the homeowner may need to
move out of their house until it is cleaned, and they will not be
allowed in until the space is cleaned through and through.

#5:  Listen To The Hygienist

The hygienist who comes to the house will offer quite a bit of
information about how the home was affected, what must be cleaned, and
how it must be cleaned.  There are many steps in the process that may be
taken at any time, and the hygienist will explain each step to ensure
their customers are not confused about what is to be done.  The
hygienist may offer cleaning products that are to be used during the
course of the year, and they will show the homeowner how simple it is to
clean up any latent spores they find.  Things that will cause growths
in the home are repaired or removed, and the house will become a much better environment for
everyone when they walk through the door.

Homeowner's in the area can ensure that they have found a number of
different ways to keep their home clean and fresh by contacting professionals when they need assistance.  Each step in the
process is a help to the homeowner who is breathing in musty air and potentially harmful air.

Fast and Effective Disaster Restoration

2/24/2017 (Permalink)

Just before the holidays, Charlotte was busy prepping her home for guests. In August, she had a leak repaired in her third floor bathroom, which had caused only minor damage. Now, while cleaning her home in December, she noticed some water damage along the walls and ceiling of her second floor bathroom, as well as in her dining room located on the first floor.  With the presence of visible water damage, Charlotte was concerned about mold and called SERVPRO of Boston for help.

Within hours, Project Manager Andrew Roche, and a team of SERVPRO professionals responded and inspected the areas in the bathroom and dining room that exhibited visible damage. SERVPRO technicians noticed what appeared to be Microbial growth on the structure and measured elevated moisture levels. In just three days, Charlotte’s home was treated and restored "Like it never even happened."

“Thank you to Andrew and his team for the prompt service … making it possible for us to get our house in good shape before my whole family came to stay with us for the holidays,” said Charlotte.

Frozen Pipes: Prevention and Treatment

12/15/2016 (Permalink)

With the colder weather officially upon us, now is an excellent time to learn more about how to avoid frozen pipes, and the subsequent water damage that can occur if those pipes expand and burst. Though frozen pipes are a common occurrence, they are highly preventable.

SERVPRO offers the following tips for preventing frozen pipes and mitigating potential damage that they can cause.

  • Insulate all the exposed pipes in your home. Especially where they may be unheated, such as the basement, attic, garage, crawl space, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets.
  • Keep the temperature the same during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower temperatures in the evening, you can prevent a costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
  • Close any inside values that supply water outdoors and open the outside value to properly drain excess water that may be in the pipes.
  • In drastically cold temperatures, let your faucet trickle. While you may be concerned about wasting water, running water is less likely to freeze.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Keep outside valves open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing it to break.
  • If you plan to be away from home for an extended period of time, leave the heat on and set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

Found a Frozen Pipe? Thaw It Out:

  • If you turn on a faucet and only a few drips come out, suspect a frozen pipe. Typically, frozen pipes are found along exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
  • Make sure the faucet remains on while treating the pipes, as the flowing water will help to melt the ice within the pipe.
  • Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad, an electric hair dryer, or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, or other open flame device.
  • Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze too.

Should you experience a loss resulting from water damage, turn off the water supply as soon as possible, and call SERVPRO of Boston immediately. The longer you wait to call, the greater the chance of mold growth and unrecoverable property. SERVPRO of Boston professionals have the expertise to prevent or mitigate the devastating effects that water damage can have.

Protect Your Home Against Chimney Fires This Winter

12/15/2016 (Permalink)

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC), an average of 22,300 chimney fires occurred annually in the United States between 2011 and 2013.

As the temperatures continue to drop, there is nothing like gathering in front of a cozy fire or basking in the warmth of a wood stove. Unfortunately, many people fail to consider the condition of their chimney before lighting those inviting fires. Not having your chimney cleaned and inspected annually can leave you at risk for a chimney fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. This can damage structures, and cause physical harm to your home and family.

Annual chimney inspections will remove flammable creosote, the major cause of chimney fires, prevent carbon monoxide intrusion and identify potential system issues before they become costly.

To mitigate the potential for a chimney fire and help keep heating appliances and fireplaces functioning properly, we offer the following safety tips:

  • Schedule an annual chimney check. Have chimneys inspected annually, and cleaned as necessary, by a qualified professional chimney service technician. This reduces the risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisonings due to creosote buildup or obstructions in the chimneys.
  • Keep it clear. Keep tree branches and leaves at least 15 feet away from the top of the chimney.
  • Install a chimney cap to keep debris, rain, snow and animals out of the chimney.
  • Choose the right fuel. For burning firewood in wood stoves or fireplaces, choose well-seasoned wood that has been split, stacked, and dried for eight to 12 months and stored in a covered and elevated location. Never burn Christmas trees or treated wood in your fireplace or wood stove.
  • Only burn wood. Crates, lumber, construction scraps, painted wood, or other treated wood releases chemicals into your home, compromising your air quality.
  • Build it right. Place firewood or firelogs at the rear of the fireplace
  • Keep the hearth area clear. Combustible material too close to the fireplace, or to a wood stove, could easily catch fire. Keep furniture at least 36” away from the hearth.
  • Use a fireplace screen. Use metal mesh or a screen in front of the fireplace to catch flying sparks that could ignite or burn holes in the carpet or flooring.
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Place detectors throughout the house and check batteries in the spring and fall. When you change your clocks for Daylight Savings Time, remember to check your batteries.
  • Never leave a fire unattended. Before turning in for the evening, be sure that the fire is fully extinguished. Supervise children and pets closely around wood stoves and fireplaces.

Even if you have already used your fireplace this year, it is never too late to have your chimney inspected. If you experience damage to your home caused by a chimney fire, call SERVPRO of Boston Downtown immediately at (617) 227-2200.

What You Can Do to Save on Your Heating Bill

10/11/2016 (Permalink)

Any season is a good season to save energy costs. With winter approaching, however, it’s even more critical as prices for home heating fuel are as volatile as ever.

The U.S. Department of Energy has the following fuel saving tips for consumers:

  • Look for furnaces with annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) ratings of no less than 78 percent.
  • Place heat-resistant radiator reflectors between exterior walls and radiators.
  • Bleed trapped air from hot water radiators once or twice a season or have a professional do it.
  • Clean warm-air registers and baseboard heaters and make sure they are not blocked by furniture, carpeting or drapes.
  • Clean or replace filters on furnaces once a month or as needed.
  • To retain heat, turn off kitchen, bath and other ventilating fans within 20 minutes after you are done cooking or bathing.
  • Install a programmable thermostat that can adjust the temperature according to your work schedule and sleeping habits.
  • Energy Star products can cut energy bills up to 30 percent. Locate retailers online at www.energystar.gov when replacing heating systems, appliances, lighting, windows, office equipment and home electronics.
  • Insulate hot water heaters and pipes.
  • Make sure your furnace or heat pump is tuned up by a professional at least once a year.

Taking Preventative Steps to Keep Your House Dry

10/11/2016 (Permalink)

Water damage can occur in homes in a variety of ways. Homeowners should check for leaks throughout their houses, inspecting pipes and connections in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. Look under and around sinks and around bathtubs for any discoloration. Do not ignore connections to dishwashers or to refrigerators with water and ice dispensers.

Make sure water is flowing properly down drains. If not, try clearing the drain with a plunger or an over the counter solution. If that does not work, call a professional for assistance.

To keep drains and pipes clear, follow some simple steps such as pouring cooking oil into a suitable container and disposing of it properly after it cools and never flushing diapers and other inappropriate items down toilets. In addition, backflow valves should be installed in sanitary and storm sewer lines.

Check the floors around water heaters for wet spots, which could indicate you have a rusted tank or other problem. If necessary, have the tank replaced as soon as possible.

A leak in the roof of your home and clogged gutters and downspouts can lead to significant water damage inside your house. As soon as you notice a leak in your roof have it inspected and repaired immediately. In addition, keep all gutters and downspouts free of leaves and other debris that could cause water to back up and leak into your house.

Owners of properties located in areas prone to flooding should give serious consideration to applying a waterproof coating or membrane to the exterior walls and installing watertight shields over doors, windows and other openings.

When winter hits, keep an eye out for snow accumulation on the downside of a higher- level roof, where blowing snow will pile up. For safe snow removal, ask a roofing contractor for a referral.

Remove snow from basement stairwells, window wells and all walls to prevent water or moisture from penetrating walls. Also, keep attics well ventilated to maintain temperatures close to the outside, which will minimize the risk of ice dams forming.

To ensure that pipes do not freeze and burst, keep the heat in your home at an acceptable level, cover exposed pipes with insulation sleeves or wrapping and open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.

If water damage does occur in your home, immediately call SERVPRO of Boston - Downtown at (617) 227-2200 for restoration services. SERVPRO’s teams will:

  • Assess damage for restorability and safety.
  • Determine the extent of the moisture content in effected areas.
  • Move and prop up furniture on blocks if necessary.
  • Extract the water.
  • Remove carpets and carpet pads if necessary.
  • Spray to treat germs and bacteria in contaminated areas.
  • Start the drying process with air movers and dehumidification equipment.
  • Ensure rooms are completely dry and conduct a walk through with homeowners to guarantee customer satisfaction.

Preventing Puffbacks

9/23/2016 (Permalink)

A puffback is a messy furnace malfunction that occurs when an oil burner backfires, sending soot throughout the interior of a home. It can happen all at once, covering the interior in grimy soot, or it can leak soot more gradually.

Initially, many people mistake soot for dust and simply wipe it away. However, ever once cleaned, this “dust” often reappears and can sometimes be accompanied by a strong, oily odor. There are several steps your clients can take to prevent damage to their home. Remind them to:

  • Have the oil-burning furnace professionally checked and cleaned annually.
  • Keep an eye out for traces of soot around their home.
  • Install a carbon monoxide monitor. Puffbacks (and the soot they create) will increase the carbon monoxide levels in their home. A carbon monoxide monitor can help to detect the puffback in its early stages.

If soot begins accumulating on objects or walls within their home, they should turn off the heating system immediately. Contact a heating professional to service the heater and restore it to proper working order.

Fortunately, if your client does experience a puffback, SERVPRO of Boston has the knowledge and experience to complete a thorough cleaning and removal of any soot and odors. Our Fire Restoration Team will respond immediately and make it look Like it never even happened®.

For more information on puffbacks and how they can be prevented, call SERVPRO of Boston at 617-304-2318.

Spring Clean-Up: Not Just About Good House Keeping

9/23/2016 (Permalink)

When you consider that the air in your home is 10 times dirtier than the air outside, Spring cleaning is about healthier living. Allergens have been accumulating during the months of winter with dust, dust mites, animal dander, mold, mildew, and ordinary house- hold dirt and grime lurking inside your home. Unless you clean them now, you’ll continue to share your living space with them.

Your friends at SERVPRO of Boston have compiled this checklist to help make sure that this year’s Spring cleaning leaves your home sparkling, spotless, and allergy-free:

Eliminate mold and mildew indoors by cleaning under the refrigerator, washing and disinfecting garbage cans, scrubbing bathrooms, and cleaning or changing shower curtains.

Examine and clean your basement thoroughly, since mold and mildew flourish in damp environments. You also can help prevent the growth of mold and mildew with humidity control products.

Remove any wet piles of leaves, grass, or mulch outside your home, since mold spores are airborne particles that can easily float indoors.

Vacuum those areas often neglected, even if they do not look dirty, since invisible allergens have a way of collecting in these undisturbed corners.

Dust everything including light fixtures, ceiling fan blades, and the tops of cabinets and armoires. You also may want to consider using an electrostatically charged cloth that traps dust, or a vacuum attachment designed specifically for dusting.

Remember to change the filters on your air conditioner, air purifiers, dehumidifiers, windows and vents. After cleaning your house, you want all the incoming air to be clean, fresh, and breathable.

Is Your Home or Business Sick?

9/23/2016 (Permalink)

According to the World Health Organization, poor indoor air quality costs $60 billion in sick time and lost production.

Poor air quality within buildings and homes can have a detrimental effect on infants and children, pregnant women, and the elderly, as well as individuals with compromised immune systems and respiratory systems and asthma and allergies.

Mold is the main culprit for poor indoor air quality, and while found naturally in the environment, an overabundance within buildings and homes can make people ill. The EPA estimates that 50 to 100 common indoor mold types have the potential for creating health problems.

While it is impossible to eliminate all mold and mold spores, growth can be reduced by controlling moisture within your home or business:

  • Correct any water leaks or standing water
  • Remove standing water under cooling coils or air handling units
  • Properly maintain humidifiers
  • Replace wet or visibly moldy insulation materials

Dirty ducts often circulate odors and contaminates like mold and dust throughout a building or home. Inspecting a buildings ductwork is the first order of business for your SERVPRO of Boston professional. Utilizing our exclusive Portable Ventilation & Air Duct Cleaning system, we will make a clean sweep of years of built up grime and dust.

SERVPRO of Boston understands that you only have one chance to make a first impression. Using safe and biodegradable products, SERVPRO of Boston professionals will create a clean, fresh and long lasting impression.

Fall Property Maintenance Tips

9/23/2016 (Permalink)

Did you know? The air in your home is 10 times more dirty than the air outside.

During the Spring and Summer months, allergens accumulate and fill areas of your home or office with dust, dust mites, animal dander, mold and other unhealthy elements. Unless you address the situation now, the air quality will continue to deteriorate.

Your friends at SERVPRO of Weymouth want to ensure that you and your property are properly prepared for the upcoming season. Therefore, we would like to offer you some helpful tips that will adequately prepare your property for the Fall:

  • Eliminate mold and mildew indoors by cleaning under the refrigerator, washing and disinfecting garbage cans, scrubbing bathrooms, and cleaning or changing shower curtains
  • Remove any wet debris from around the home or office, as mold spores are airborne particles that can easily float indoors
  • Schedule to have your chimney cleaned within the next month. Excessive buildup of creosote and debris, as well as miscellaneous branches, leaves and animal nests can create a dangerous situation as it increases the potential to spark a chimney fire.
  • Remember not to ignore your ductwork, vents and HVAC systems. Unnecessary dirt and debris can pose a serious threat to the health of your family or employees if they are not properly maintained.

SERVPRO’s licensed technicians can provide all of the remediation and cleaning services necessary for the upcoming season. A proper cleaning will combat all particles that infiltrate your property and provide for a safe and worry-free environment by:

  • Enhancing your indoor air quality
  • Improving overall air circulation
  • Eliminating built-up dirt and contaminants
  • Extending the life of your heating and cooling systems

Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Boston at 617-227-2200 and rest easier this Fall knowing your property is clean and out of harm’s way.

This September: You Can Be the Hero

9/23/2016 (Permalink)

National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM). It is a time to prepare yourself and those in your care for emergencies and disasters. If you've seen the news recently, you know that emergencies can happen unexpectedly in communities just like yours, to people like you. We've seen tornado outbreaks, river floods and flash floods, historic earthquakes, tsunamis, and even water main breaks and power outages in U.S. cities affecting millions of people for days at a time.

Police, fire and rescue may not always be able to reach you quickly in an emergency or disaster. The most important step you can take in helping your local responders is being able to take care of yourself and those in your care; the more people who are prepared, the quicker the community will recover.

This September, please prepare and plan in the event you must go for three days without electricity, water service, access to a supermarket, or local services for several days. Just follow these steps:

  • Stay Informed
  • Access Ready.gov to learn what to do before, during, and after an emergency.
  • Make a Plan: Discuss, agree on, and document an emergency plan with those in your care.
  • Build a Kit: Keep enough emergency supplies - water, nonperishable food, first aid, prescriptions, flashlight, and battery-powered radio on hand.
  • Get Involved: The whole community can participate in programs and activities to make their families and homes safer from risks and threats.

By taking a few simple actions, you can make your family safer. Consider planning a Ready Kids event in your community to encourage families to get prepared with their children.

  • Volunteer to present preparedness information in your child's class or in PTO/PTA meetings.
  • Get involved with your local American Red Cross Chapter or train with a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Are You Prepared for Spring Flooding?

3/23/2016 (Permalink)

While spring brings the promise of warm weather and longer days, it also brings a variety of conditions that can include heavy rains and severe weather, which can increase your flood risk. During the rainy season, we are at high risk for flash flooding, which can occur rapidly within a few minutes or hours of excessive rainfall.

As one of the most common hazards in the United States, it's important we prepare for the potential disaster that flooding can cause. Even if you are located in a low risk flood zone remember that anywhere it rains, it can flood. Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, doesn't mean you won't in the future.

In order to help prepare you for the possibility of a flood, I offer the following tips:

  • Build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan
  • Elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel in your home if you live in an area that has a high flood risk
  • Install check-valves to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your facility
  • Seal basement walls and floors with waterproofing compounds to prevent seepage through cracks
  • Always keep your gutters and downspouts clean to allow water to flow freely
  • Prepare a flood evacuation plan
  • Know how to safely shut-off utilities
  • Keep insurance and vital records in a water-proof box
  • Have a portable radio to listen for important current information

When your facility sustains water damage from flooding, you should call SERVPRO immediately at (617) 227-2200. The longer you wait to call, the greater the chance of mold growth and unrecoverable property. SERVPRO professionals have the expertise to prevent or mitigate the devastating effects of water damage.
